I grew up (and still live) in Switzerland and know two people from school whose mother was in both cases from the Philippines. Also one of the teacher (very introverted, fat and not good looking) told us that his wife was from the Philippines.
Until now, I thought this was just a coincidence. After all, many Swiss marry a foreigner and 33%+ of the Swiss population is foreign born. But after making some research, it seems Mail-order bride is still relatively common in some countries like the USA.
I always thought that it’s some kind of joke not to be taken seriously but now I am seriously wondering, do you know people here in Switzerland who “imported” their wife (or husband, but this seems less common) from a poorer country ? Is this really a thing ?

It’s never common in any western country, but there’s a handful of people who’ll marry any conventionally attractive woman who will put up to them. Some of them think only foreign women are up to their standards or something, and will sometimes meet them on holidays, or even go and actively look. It usually doesn’t go too well long term. Short term the man gets companionship and the woman gets the promise to get out of poverty but that’s usually not quite enough for long term happiness, especially as the women tend to have a hard time finding fulfilling work and the men are rather mysogynistic in the first place.
