Nothing on r/tories about this. Too busy mocking the BBC lefties. Priorities.
Get the Filipino crew in. Works for every other kind of marine staffing issue. They are incredibly cheap. And loyal. Don’t ask for pensions or insurance or time off or anything.
I’m sure they’re brainstorming how to get people to work somewhere just now but haven’t come up with the world changing idea that making the compensation attractive will work best.
Have they considered press gangs? It worked quite well in a bygone age and I dare say it’ll open up a few jobs in port towns…
Not sure if they resume hiring **less white male again or not.
To join the navy you have to go through a recruitment process that’s been outsourced to Capita. The high street recruitment offices manned by old servicemen and women with experience have been replaced by call centres. The process takes months and people give up. I’m sure someone will be able to give the figures but recruitment figures have consistently worsened since Capita was involved, yet they have recently had their contract renewed.
Is this why I’m getting a load of adverts on Reddit to join the navy? I dread to wonder what a ship crewed by Redditors would look like. I’m not sure it would ever leave port.
Well, could this be a viable way of getting the migrants out of hotels?
Capita have fucked recruitment for the armed forces. It takes far too long and requires essentially putting your life on hold for a year. And all for a badly paid job where the benefits don’t outweigh the negatives.
I made a comment in this sub about how we don’t have enough sailors and was torn to shreds how I “don’t know what I am talking about” yet here is an article showing my point.
I wonder if u/FPL_Police will comment like he did in that thread that I said not enough sailors exist to launch anything.
Will likely double down despite evidence.
Ok so privatization in the form of Capita handling naval recruitment has now actually compromised our national military strategic capabilities with their incompetence. Now what? Surely there should be some consequences for this rather than just handing them more contracts?
Lets not act like Uk can afford to fly sorties. Even the missiles that were recently fired won’t be replentished for a few years.
Perhaps they should ask the “useless white males” if they can do it?
What a joke we are. Iran and Russia must be passing their pants.
Yet another outsourcing fail.
The Tories really are just utterly crap at running a country.
Very good at running it into the ground I guess. But terrible at running it well, or even with a slight degree of competence.
Paint a rainbow on the ships, then try a recruitment drive.
Many years ago I was planning to join the military when I finished Uni. The plan was intelligence corps officer entry in the Army or RAF intelligence officer. Spoke with both, sat some exams, even did some off the books training with the Army during uni. The local army recruiter was super keen to have me sign up and really eager to get me through the process. After months of waiting to hear back, my medical failed and was declared permanently medically unfit by capita, due to something very ridiculous. The local recruiter was very upset and said I could appeal it and use him as reference, but I decided against it . I had been fucked around for about 9 months waiting to hear back from Capita, and they rejected me without a conversation , despite having a medical done directly to my GP whom was himself a former soldier, and approved me. I was so pissed off by the entire process that I said fuck it to that and went into the private IT industry.
I am not at all surprised that we are struggling. The recruitment process has been ruined by Tory contracts. The government have massively reduced their recruitment targets year on year, but still they fail, and get rewarded with a new contract. It’s all Tory corruption from top to bottom in every aspect of our society.
People don’t want to join the military and spend a lifetime killing people in the world’s poorest countries, why is this a surprise?
If all the warmongers in this sub signed up, they’d fill a carrier in a weekend.
I just hope when labour are in they see how shit recruitment is in the hands of the private sector and get that pipeline sorted. It’s not the only issue with recruitment numbers but it is one of the biggest. It takes too long from applying to getting into training and that’s for the “healthy” recruits. Anyone that has a bump in their medical record faces months of back-and-forth bullshit or no response at all without constant badgering.
Jesus Christ Britain get your shit together. This is not even funny anymore.
Tried joining the Reserves years ago did the interview and a pre 1.5mile run to see if i was fit enough was all good they wanted me to go for airborne, but never heard anything back lol. Got married in the end and moved on.
If you want to be a big fish then at least fund your military accordingly
As someone who lives in the north east I always thought “I was born in Blyth” adverts were a local thing..
Ahhh yes, the Telegraph/Torygraph. That great example of robust, partisan, objective, and quality journalism….
Sadly the Navy can no longer be considered an effective fighting force. They may have advanced weapons and equipment but if you don’t have enough people to operate and or support it……it’s useless.
The UK has given so much weaponry to Ukraine that if WW3 broke out the Army have less than 3 weeks worth of ammo if it were to consume it at the same rate as the Ukrainian military.
The RFA has lost something like 70-100 deckies since Covid because the job becomes more and more shite every year.
Pay rises are crap, conditions are shite, officers think they’re in the RN and play pretend that they’re Nelson all day, talk to you like you’re shit on their shoe. Can’t get a TV signal when you’re tied up in Devonport. Wifi on board is measured in the tens of kb/s, and that’s when it’s working (which it never is).
Endless bureacracy and self-policing. Making you assess yourself in what can only be an exercise in forcing you into self-demoralisation. Write pages about what you’ve done to prove you are doing your job, mandatory that you present yourself as the world’s best sailor, and then your boss will decide if you’re a liar just talking yourself up or not – hell of a way to do progress reviews.
New rules mean that lads who have come in, done basic training and one 6 month trip mopping alleyways now earn as much as fully qualified sailors who hold an AB ticket and have years of experience.
Recruitment process takes well over a year in most cases and attrition of people recruited into the apprenticeship scheme is sky high. Go to HMS Raleigh and sleep 6 to a room, 17 year old lads sharing with 73 (!!!) year olds when I was there. Rooms are dirty and nigh on unliveable (hello to the boys in Exeter block).
I could go on and on.
You spent two years bogged down in the desert with nothing to show for it while the country fell apart. What do you expect?
It’s an absolute farce to join the U.K. military. My application took so long to the point I got another job which i settled into and by that point I couldn’t be bothered continuing with the application
British govt: ‘Well well if it isn’t the consequences of my own actions.’
It’s astonishing to me that we’re struggling to fix these issues. Defence, intelligence, policing, healthcare, and the civil service are all struggling.
Why?
Recruitment takes longer than almost any private role, recruitment is often inflexible because of overly-strict criteria often because training is outdated and inflexible, and we don’t pay well in most cases. With some exceptions, we are consistently ruling out the most talented people from entering these professions in one way or another. It’s maddeningly daft and increasingly risky for the UK.
The Navy might need to resort to kidnapping drunks in the pubs again.
