Rwanda: How mountain gorillas have prospered in times of peace
[Applause] this is not your average hike we are trekking through a raincloud up the side of a dormant volcano to see one of the world’s most endangered animals and one of our closest primates the mountain gorilla yes yes gers have moved are looking for food they’re following them
We’re going to use another entrance on the other side then we get in patience is one of the Park’s most experienced Rangers and helped habituate the gorillas we are tracking we’re now Crossing into the rainforest ah it’s like quick standand we are now inside the park yeah
Uh we in Kingdom of Godless if you hear any doing as I’m going to do you have to pay attention if he does like this like coughing uh either you are nearby him he doesn’t want you to keep approaching him wants you to move back that’s a gorilla that’s a gorilla of
Course so after the co this is now the protocol to make sure the gorillas are safe from any infectious diseases that we might carry should I be scared of the mountain gers as long as we are together okay um they’re like they’re like when I take you there it’s like taking you home
To to Vis my family my own family my children wow he’s a big boy this the king of the jungle Mr gahinga this is the king yes Mr gahinga yeah I don’t know if I said Mr oh his majesty his majesty he’s the king the big boss patients first met this family 20
Years ago their name amahoro means peace and here they found it a pocket of Refuge from poachers and the active conflict ravaging neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo when you you meet them uh they are ready they CA to humans there’s something that I don’t understand I don’t understand how people can come to
Kill this beautiful animals Rel to humans genetically we the same the scar in his hand speaks to the times peace was broken by other silver backs trying to win over his females he has six of them to protect mothers to his growing family all of them for the Sens we did in
2018 there were 1,63 Mountain gers but the population of them is growing is coming up and we are putting too much effort in protection and conservation of them the last gorilla ping here in danda was in 2002 and that will be the last one this pocket is big enough for now
But the pressure will increase as their population grows and the climate changes but that’s a worry for another generation now it’s Meal Time which for them is all day they call him the king of the jungle this is the alpha silver back of the family and he does really
Feel like he’s sitting on his throne very majestically eating all the food around him and after food a spot of yoga yeah yes it’s time for for having break for socializing they have like like a biological clock by this time all G they break for digesting what they eat
In the morning and socializing that’s why you see them all of them stopping eating our time with them is limited and as we pull ourselves away they continue unmoved but we leave touched by the peace same body us Sky News Rwanda
