  1. I applaud this, HOWEVER, I want my leaders to make sound intelligent decisions from complex topics, that serves constituents.

  2. People are probably going to “miss” that Down’s Syndrome has a pretty wide spectrum of outcomes and disability, and by the same token intelligence and capacity in the general population is hugely varied. Having experienced the “intelligence” of many an elected official, I’m convinced that someone with mild intellectual disability is probably distinctly advantaged against the sort of absolutely dreadful fuckwits who often get elected.

This woman was a civil servant for over 20 years, obviously she’s competent.

  3. Great, what’s next? The first dog Parliament member?

  4. She’s elected so she’s equally capable as all others elected. That’s democracy.

  5. Okay… first instinct is… is she capable of doing the job? I’d have concerns.

I suppose I’d like to see some videos of her speaking re public administration to make an informed opinion.

But, reddit histrionics aside, any normal person is going to have concerns… like when Victoria’s Secret had the DS model, as people of low intelligence are easy to take advantage of.

  6. “We will drive this nation into the ground to show you how open minded we are”

  7. I think I’ll wait to see what she does with her new job before passing judgement.

  8. “Average politician in my country” jokes in 3..2..1..

  9. With all respect, does she enough for responsibilities that comes with that being in parliament member? The percentage of his syndrome is important too okey but you know, we’re not choose people for only representing things, we want to choose them for solving problems and managing country, I don’t know bro, not my country so it’s kinda disrespectful but I’m just curious about thoughts of the Spanish on this

  10. As OP, these comments are absolutely disgusting. Get a life.

  11. whats with all the ignorant, ableist fuckwits in the comments?

  12. I’m sure she will raise the average of honesty for politicians, so I don’t get why not. Parliaments should represent all the people, not only the neurotypical ones.

  13. “Mar Galcerán went down in history as Spain’s first elected Parliament member with Down syndrome.”

  14. She is still gonna raise the average IQ of the parliament

  15. Don’t want to drag her down (pun not intended) but in my country politicans are already requires to have a mental disability otherwise things would run great. We don’t want that here.

  16. Well let’s see how she is at her job. Because diversity doesn’t matter one bit if they’re still as shit as their job if they weren’t diversity

  17. Crazy that Spain went from Franco to this in 50 years

  18. Well to be honest parliamentarians’ only job here seems to be pushing the button the party tells them to push for every vote, and somehow they manage to fuck even *that* up sometimes.

Yeah, I’m thinking she’ll feel right at home.

  19. I wonder if in France this time they will ban coverage of the Spanish parliament because it will be too stressful for women who have had abortions.

  20. People with intellectual disabilities shouldn’t make laws.

  21. actually, it might be one of those rare case of Mosaic Down Syndrome, where people just get a normal IQ if their parents take care about specific intakes of some vitamins or whatever. Mosaic meaning here that a lot of the cells in the foetus get the genetic disorder, but also that a lot DO NOT get the disorder, helping bringing the individual to a more average state compared to other Down Syndrome people.

  22. *Sigh* literally electing a retard to office to virtue signal their inclusiveness. These fucking people…

  23. If one member of parliament can have Down syndrome then it should be fine for all of the members of parliament to have Down syndrome.

  24. Democracy in action, cool to see and hopefully she’ll manage better than quite a few other elected politicans, shouldn’t be too hard!

  25. It’s a great achievement for differently abled people. Differently abled people also have high empathy so, she may actually do a better job than most neurotypicals. ( I’m looking at you Donald Trump)

  26. Marvellous. Best of luck to her (regardless of her affiliation) 🫡
