Hi all,

Non-German here. My brother who loves in Germany recently bought a house in there, and I was thinking of gifting him a nameplate similar to the one attached in the picture.

I wasn’t sure if having a name plate on an detached house is considered appropriate to have in Germany – I know privacy is a big part of the culture, so I’d like to know more before gifting him this.

He currently lives in an apartment building, and has a small nametag (1cm high paper strip) next to the post slot.

Thank you!

  1. Yeah, the whole privacy thing doesn’t make so much sense when you consider that we write our names on the outside of our houses/apartments. I can always understand when foreigners are puzzled by that.

That being said, large nameplates are not common either. Some people have them, but certainly less than 5 %. It’s therefore not a safe gift, people might prefer to have something more understated on their house, or something that fits their particular decoration style. Still, you know your brother better than I do, and if you think he’ll like the sign, go for it.

  2. My parents very old house (built in the 1700, big renovation in the 60’s) has a meter high mural of our family name and our family’s guild symbol on the wall.

It’s not really common these days, but theres nothing speaking against it.

  3. Some apartment buildings have a regulation on how name boards can look like. A change to it requires approval of the apartment owners.

So, just check if this isn’t the case.
