The European Parliament has agreed on a resolution that proposes stripping Hungary of its EU Council voting rights. On 16 January, Member of the European Parliament Petri Sarvamaa [announced](https://x.com/petrisarvamaa/status/1747307981362876854?s=20) this development on his X/Twitter account.
Article 7.2 allows the Parliament, with a two-thirds majority approval, to call on Hungary to answer before the European Council on its breaches of the rule of law. This could lead to the suspension of Hungary’s voting rights. The draft agreement of the resolution, as obtained by Euractiv, also directs the Committee on Legal Affairs to take the necessary steps to review the legality of the Commission’s decision before the Court of Justice.

However, the move to restrict Hungary’s rights within the EU faces opposition. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has pledged to veto any decisions aimed at limiting Hungary’s rights in the European Union.
Just do it!
He thought he could hold Ukraine hostage single-handedly, and fuck other EU countries? Get to give him a taste of his own medicine by losing veto right.
enter stage left Slovakia 🙂
About time. Now drop them from NATO
Too bad this doesn’t apply to NATO.
Pfft russia is going to put everything they have on this. The US should watch closely for a taste of things to come because they are going to go even harder on them.
I wish this article explained what the law is concerning the power of veto and the procedure to revoke it.
Can Slovakia veto a motion approved by two-thirds’ majority to hold Hungary accountable, or rather a subsequent motion to strip Hungary of its right of veto? If anybody knows, I’d be grateful for an explanation.
Also: fuck fascists.
Slovakia will just veto it… EU has a broken voting system its just a fancy trade and passport agreement.
What took so long?
O wow.
Don’t let the door hit you!
Ironically, this will make him more popular in Hungary, as he is seen as the warrior who protects the freedom of Hungary from the West/EU/Liberals/Brussels/Soros/LGBTQ-lobby, etc.
This is such an insane overstep. There’s no point in even voting anymore. You’ll just be stripped of your rights if you vote “wrong”.
Never in thousand years EU will take care of damn thing! Let alone helping next door Ukraine in any major way. After all, EU is used to free ride provided by US.
What is the realistic chance if this happen? I’m not from EU so I’m not sure how they work. But from my understanding of politics, there are a lot of talk but a few of actions.
Fuck Hungary, they absolutely suck.
Overdue…
What about Turkey? Or is Turkey too strategic?
Edit: sorry confused this with NATO
Good. It’s a thorn in Europe’s side and it’s about time they did something about it
They should just change the voting system from Veto to Majority rule, Sure Hungary is using veto, then Idk Slovakia uses veto then another country
It’s all about democracy and freedoms, untill it goes against their narrative. Hypocrite EU is hypocrite.
Expanding the EU on former soviet countries was a mistake.
I really hope this goes through, but I’m not holding my breath.
Seems in bad taste to say “yeah you’re a member but you can’t vote” slippery slope and such for future disagreements.
That would be like not counting Florida’s votes (even though it’s an awful place)
Slovakia is the new Poland. This will fail unfortunately. EU is doomed to be paralyzed. We need a whole new process to form a federal state union by a constitutional assembly of willing European states. That’s the only way.
So, as an American who generally keeps up on EU and Eastern European issues… can someone tell me why Slovakia is coming up in so many replies? I know about what Hungary’s been up to lately, but why is everyone saying “then Slovakia can…!” EuroNews hasn’t mentioned Slovakia in this mess at all. Lots of Hungary and Turkey but no Slovakia
Bad timing when Sweden is still reliant on them for NATO accession.
I know Hungary is f’ed up, but you can’t just ban an entity just because it votes differently. That’s not how it works.
Tread lightly EU, for you are in dangerous waters. A wrong move can easily see the union falling apart in the next two decades.
About time!
So this is how democracy dies, with thunderous applause.
I’m confused, but can’t states absorb the funds and then make individual donations to Ukraine? Can’t veto national decisions
I feel like they should have waited until Sweden was in NATO thought.

Now do Turkey.
About. Fucking. Time.

The EU’s attempt to secure a crucial €50 billion financial aid package for Ukraine faced a setback as Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, [vetoed](https://euromaidanpress.com/2023/12/15/orban-vetoes-eus-e50-bn-ukraine-aid-after-eu-open-door-to-ukraines-membership/?swcfpc=1) the proposal on 15 December 2023.
According to Sarvamaa, the parliament is set to vote on this resolution on Thursday, 18 January.

The resolution’s primary focus is the initiation of procedures under Article 7.2 of the EU Treaty to strip Hungary of its voting rights and to start a parliamentary investigation into the legality of the European Commission’s decision to unfreeze €10 billion in funds for Hungary in December 2023, as reported by [Euractiv](https://www.euractiv.com/section/justice-home-affairs/news/eu-parliament-wants-commission-in-court-hungary-stripped-of-voting-rights/).
