I’m sure the BBC will use this to downplay any future grooming cases. Certainly got more coverage.
“False allegations of rape are extremely rare, but when they are made they can seriously undermine the credibility of genuine victims, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.”
In addition, it looks like two people who were falsely accused tried to kill themselves.
By no means should we as a society use a sample such as this to not believe true victims but holy hell, this person has done a lot of damage and her 8.5 years in prison and the publicity will hopefully deter others from making false accusations.
It appears as if the police carried out an extremely thorough investigation and kept quiet about their findings until after the court judgement which I think is good for true rape victims. I also think it’s good that it’s being mainstream reported on now.
My god this case was absolute insanity. Feel terrible for the victims of this horrific monster.
“False rape allegations are extremely rare”
How do they know that?
What a wild series of events. It’s difficult to tell from the article whether she knew the police were onto her, but the fact she continued to come up with more outlandish lies and even self-harmed to bolster the stories, it suggests some severe mental health issues to me.
This isn’t to excuse her actions of course. It’s absolutely horrible what she did to those men, and that she fleeced £20k from the public shows a real lack of empathy.
I can’t see any mention of DNA being recovered from her ? Just the hammer ? Sure DNA is the principal form of evidence in any rape case ? A false accusation of rape is of course plain wrong and should be punished by law. Worryingly it may sow doubt in prosecutors’ minds as to the validity of genuine cases of grooming and rape sadly all to common today.
I’m from the area and I remember a lot of people baying for the blood of the accused men. My sister still lives in the area and she was always spamming me with local updates about it and I think the collective consensus was that the accused were going to end up greviously wounded or dead following the accusations. Thank goodness due process prevailed here. I still see those stupid elephants all over Facebook though.
What I want to know is how exactly *did* she acquire her injuries? At the time her story seemed passably believable purely on the basis of their severity. I want to ask “is it really possible that somebody could inflict that on themselves for attention?” and I know the likely answer is “yes”, but it’s difficult to understand.
Sentenced to 8 and half years, thats more than what a lot of the people in grooming gangs get.
