I work for National Land Survey so I do 40-60 hours a week at summertime and right now I have 10 weeks off to use those hours as employer does not pay for overtime but I get 1:1 to be off and I have to use it before end of April. I have some spared vacation days too.
This time of year boundary stones are frozen and snow covered so it would be digging archives and other boring stuff anyway. I prefer tinkering in the garage.

With AI I really hope UBI finally becomes a thing and people can dedicate their lives to the things that they are passionate about. Monetizing those things would be a bonus source of income. Lets remember that some of the top companies were created in garages during free time. You can create value to society outside of your working hours, or even while unemployed.

I suppose the parental leave is a major factor for the drop of work hours of men. I used it too (both my wife and me went 25h per week), and it was the happiest time of my life. No amount of cash or career could make me not using that parental leave.
And thats what basically all my fellow millenial coworkers think.
i do 30h/week atm and im sure there is still like 10h bullshit within those where i do nothing but drink coffee, brew coffee or talk about doing so.
I mean, I like working because I like to have a comfortable life coming from the bottom. If people want to quit working and get by with ubi that’s cool, as long as the working people are rewarded even better.

I’ve met some Slovak guys in Germany, construction workers, they literally got to work at 9, drink coffee and stay on the phone until 10, work from 10-12 then lunch break 1h, then work from 13-16 and leave, mf be working 4-5 hours, but they were paid bad like 1600euro/month.
And they’re poorer and poorer
Based. Hopefully we get to a point where 90% of the population doesn’t need to work and there’s abundant guaranteed income. There was a study recently in French part of Switzerland that said that 58% of the people wouldn’t work if they didn’t have to, so those 42% that like to work can work. Besides, excessive working hours are mostly an industrial phenomena, in pre-industrial agricultural Europe peasants didn’t work over the winter because there was nothing to do when the ground is frozen and snow is falling; they stockpiled food and maybe went to town to look for some light seasonal work. Working all the hours all the time at all seasons of the year is an industrial concept.
And then force Americans to pay for their defense…
Thanks to these ridiculous labor costs… 40% of median salary goes to government here in Finland. At least the housing expenses are comparably low to countries like Germany. People want WORK not GOVERNMENT AID.

I think the metrics might be a little skewed towards “less hours = less work”. We are way more connected than we used to be and are expected to deliver faster and to know more than when hours became the measure of amount of work done. Being connected and committed all the time means working just looks different for many of us now than it did 70, 50 or even 5-10 years ago!
Because over working is overrated and doesn’t leads to happiness most of the times.
The faster person realizes working harder is useless the better
We should all work much less in the age of automation and AI.
