  1. But Europeans will never know the beauty of taking a highway interchange at 100km+, or pulling in to a 1000+ car parking lot.

  2. Population 0? I’m sure there is one or two homeless encampments underneath the highway interchange. I’ve heard they’ve got a big problem with homelessness there.

In all seriousness, having 30,000 people live in such a small space must get cramped, but it does demonstrate the ridiculous inneficancy of American car-centric infrastructure.

  3. I hate interchanges like this. The number of times I’ve been in a strange city, looking at an exit sign with four off-ramps displaying the names of four towns I’ve never heard of before, trying to decide in six seconds which one I’m supposed to take. Of course, as soon as you commit you realize it was the wrong one, but you won’t be offered a chance to turn around again for 15 minutes. The worst.

  4. They’re comparing a city that has been around since antiquity versus a city in a country at least 10 times the size of Italy?

  5. Sounds like it might be clickbait bullshit, the entire city of Sienna has a population of roughly ~55k and looking at google maps its significantly larger than just the city centre pictured. Maybe the population is really that heavily concentrated in the centre but I have my doubts.

Moreover there appears to be a rather big highway interchange just a few hundred meters south of Siena and a highway going to Florence within a kilometer of the city centre.

  6. We have highways in Europe, too. This post makes no sense

  7. Siena is absolutely gorgeous and really fascinating with its old streets and houses in the city centre. If you’re ever in Italy, go give it a visit. Haven’t been to the US but I guess I’ll skip the highway interchange.

  8. I mean that’s honestly a shitty comparison. If there’s space and the need for car infrastructure ( I take it as given in the US)-sure why not build a giant intersection.

It’s the same as comparing some big ass airport with a city center and say *look, 100.000 could live in the same space* it just doesn’t make sense.

  9. Just because of this post, I am going to vote for Trump.
