Bijna de helft (45 procent) van de Vlaamse jongeren kiest voor een woonplaats op maximaal vijf kilometer van hun ouders. Dat blijkt uit cijfers van Statistiek Vlaanderen. Verder ligt de gemiddelde leeftijd om het Vlaamse nest te verlaten op 25,2 jaar.

Eerder gebeurde al onderzoek in Nederland, Duitsland, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de Verenigde Staten, maar in Vlaanderen was er tot nu weinig bekend over de eerste verhuisbeweging van jongeren die het ouderlijk huis verlaten. Het nieuwe rapport, dat gebruikmaakt van de DEMOBEL-gegevens van Statbel (demografische rijksregistergegevens en XY-coördinaten), werpt daar nu een licht op.
Uit de analyses blijkt dat de gemiddelde leeftijd waarop jongeren (18 tot 39 jaar) het ouderlijk huis verlaten 25,2 jaar bedraagt. De gemiddelde afstand tussen de woning van de jongere en die van zijn/haar ouder(s) bedraagt in vogelvlucht 14 kilometer. Bovendien vestigt 45 procent zich binnen een afstand van vijf kilometer van de ouder die het dichtste bij woont, 13 procent binnen een afstand van een kilometer.
Locatie
Jongeren trekken bij het verlaten van het ouderlijk huis relatief vaak naar de groot- en centrumsteden. Zo neemt het aandeel jongeren toe in de grootsteden (van 19 tot 29 procent) en de centrumsteden (van 11 tot 15 procent).
Op het platteland en alle andere types van gemeenten daalt het aandeel jongeren dan weer. Vooral hooggeschoolden trekken vaker naar de stad. “Toch is spreken van een echte brain drain van het platteland wat overdreven, omdat dit vaak een tijdelijk fenomeen is dat samenhangt met de eerste woonlocatie na het verlaten van het ouderlijk huis”, zo stelt Statistiek Vlaanderen.
De analyses in het rapport hebben betrekking op de situatie in de jaren 2017-2018. “Maar de resultaten van de analyses blijven wel relevant om ook in 2023 uitspraken te doen over de verhuisbewegingen van jongeren”, aldus Statistiek Vlaanderen.

Research has previously been conducted in the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, but in Flanders little was known until now about the first movement of young people leaving their parental home. The new report, which uses Statbel’s DEMOBEL data (demographic national register data and XY coordinates), now sheds light on this.
The analyzes show that the average age at which young people (18 to 39 years) leave the parental home is 25.2 years. The average distance between the home of the young person and that of his/her parent(s) is 14 kilometers as the crow flies. Moreover, 45 percent settle within a distance of five kilometers from the parent who lives closest, 13 percent within a distance of one kilometer.
Location
When leaving the parental home, young people relatively often move to large and central cities. For example, the share of young people is increasing in the major cities (from 19 to 29 percent) and the central cities (from 11 to 15 percent).
In rural areas and all other types of municipalities, the share of young people is declining again. Highly educated people in particular are more likely to move to the city. “Nevertheless, speaking of a real brain drain from the countryside is somewhat exaggerated, because this is often a temporary phenomenon associated with the first residential location after leaving the parental home,” says Statistics Flanders.
The analyzes in the report relate to the situation in the years 2017-2018. “But the results of the analyzes remain relevant to make statements about the relocation movements of young people in 2023,” according to Statistics Flanders.
