> And there’s no doubt about our politics being rooted in the left and centre-left of political discourse
Ahahahahahahahaha good one
Kate Forbes a part of that discourse, aye?
This is why he’ll never lead Scotland to independence. Someone who can’t even describe themselves as a nationalist is not fit to lead the SNP.
Guy is simply a careerist sleazebag
I’ve never been comfortable with the Party in SNP
Nationalism is built on thinking one people are better than the other and is inherently right wing. ‘civic’ nationalism is just putting lipstick on a pig.
Humza is uncomfortable because he understands that, but it’s embarrassing to admit.
Sturgeon said the same thing.
> “But we’ve worked really hard to make it really clear, and I think it’s understood, that we are a civic national party, we are a party that believes it doesn’t matter really where you come from but where we are going”
Aye sure.
The SNP know that independence would be an economic disaster. The support for it regardless is the same toxic nationalism that always blights that ideology.
Just a few days ago a poster was advocating deporting unionists and encouraging scots with english families to leave scotland.
Best dissolve the party then pal
On a similar note, Starmer demonstrated during the biggest worker strikes in 24 years that he wasn’t comfortable with the ‘Labour’ in Labour Party.
I mean, the SNP is a nationalist party…
It does sound awfully close to BNP…
TL;DR — The journalist brought up that ‘nationalism’ is ‘destructive and dangerous’ in other parts of the world, bringing up India and Pakistan as an example. Yousaf said that what’s happening in Scotland is not comparable to what happened in India and Pakistan. But that ‘national’ in SNP makes him ‘uncomfortable’ because it can be misinterpreted to be a negative (like the journalist brought up). But he said the SNP are a ‘civic national party’.
Is he talking about his drug dealer brother in law yet?
Curious why he’d join the party then… never mind lead it.
I mean, it’s in the name.
Nothing wrong with being a nationalist, just don’t be an actual nazi.
The SNP is officially dead.
Not wanting to say I told you, but I told you. That’s what you get for electing him. Say goodbye to your common identity. If you want to know what your future holds, look to Roscrea across the irish channel and behold.
But this is reddit afterall so why do i bother.
BNP British National Party.
SNP Exactly.
I remember being at a party in Berlin around 2010/11, when the SNP did really well at a GE.
All the Germans were horrified to hear that the nationalists had won control of the Scottish parliament.
“Nationalist” has more connotations than simply “wanting the nation to formally exist”, and it’s obviously these connotations that Yousaf (and Sturgeon before him) is uncomfortable with.
Not rocket science, eh?
National’s a good word. Anyway, Scottish Country Party would sound too much like a hybrid ceilidh and hoedown.
Rishi is comfortable with the “Con” in the Conservative Party
I’ve never been comfortable with this man having authority. Guess you shouldn’t lead a party if you don’t like what it stands for. That’s a bit too intellectually demanding for this grifter though.
nationalists don’t want to be nationalists. what a laugh.
Here come the Ibrox branch of the Frothing Gammon to tell everyone how anti-white he is again
Have voted SNP since Blair. Not Voting SNP with him leading the party. The next election is going to surprise a lot of people in the SNP.
This needs a misleading headline flare (if thats not a flare, it should be).
It not the fault of OP as its the headline of the source. However it is misleading in that it is a quote that sits far from its intended meaning when removed from the words that sit around it.
I am an SNP voter and feel the same. Good on him.
The guy’s an opportunist. He would have used whatever political vehicle was most likely to get him a position of power.
He bemoans about the native white population, ofcourse he doesnt like ‘national’ in the SNP; he isnt Scottish.
Except what he wants IS comparable, in every single way.
Makes sense. The N just gives the opposition ammunition to use ‘nationalist’ as a slur (which is absolutely how it is being used), and a large number of their voters are not nationalists. They are liberals, socialists, social democrats, internationalist, even some conservatives etc. All sorts.
Calling them the SIP is even worse though. Honestly, Alba is a sick name and it’s a shame the mutants took it. Maybe go for the Scottish Seccessionist Front purely for the rattle factor.

A similar issue was raised by Sturgeon in 2017 at [the Edinburgh Book Festival ](https://www.edbookfest.co.uk/news/scotland-s-first-minister-admits-nationalism-a-difficult-word-at-book-festival)
What a shitty headline
