It’s the right weather for one!!!! I have one problem the missus uses lentils for a stew when did this become a thing??? Not a fan!.

  5. Here’s the thing about stews; they’re pottages, and as such just about any grain or vegetable you have in the cupboard is totally acceptable.
    There is no right or wrong, within reason.
    If the end product is safe to eat, nutritious and tastes good, you’ve won.
    The pic looks good, I’d lash into a bowl of it on a cold day!

  6. Made a vegan Irish stew for a friend a while back with lentils and it turned out great. Most of the flavour in Irish stew comes from the herbs/spices anyway since traditionally the type of meat you put into stew were the cheaper cuts anyway.

  9. You can get a packet of ‘soup mix’ in most supermarkets for a couple of euros, it contains a mixture of red and yellow lentils, barley, chickpeas, split peas and a couple of other pulses and is great to throw a handful into stews, soups, casseroles etc.

  10. We started using lentils because one eejit in the house developed a gluten intolerance so we had to nix the barley. Not as good but bulks it up decently

  14. Soup mix? ah forever and a day associated with homemade Irish stew, bulks up the stew absorbing the flavour want it nice and thick

  18. I’m not even thinking about the lentils, my question is why can’t I see big lumps of potato and why on earth are the carrots cut so small???

  20. I make a vegetarian one with lentils, not as good as real stew but still pretty delish.

  27. Nope not an Irish stew if it has lentils.

    It is now a lamb lentil stew.

  29. I never had lentils. Sometimes had Barley which I am not a massive fan tbh.
