US delegation demonstrates support in visit to Taiwan following election • FRANCE 24 English

The Unofficial delegation from the United States their main message today was that the American commitment to Taiwan is as strong as a rock that’s what these former American Top officials were saying when they were speaking to outgoing president lie and incoming uh president-elect uh William Li former sorry outgoing president tying W I

Should say um will it be seen as provocative by the US uh by China well the US has taken steps to make sure that Beijing will not respond with anger this is as I said an unofficial delegation why is that well the US doesn’t officially recognize Taiwan as a country

They only sent uh former American officials no one that is here at the moment is serving currently and the delegation was also uh sure to ensure that they suggested that uh the US is uh focused on increasing and a facilitating cooperation peace and stability uh in the region

Taiwan’s president-elect Lai Ching-te hailed the island’s “solid partnership” with Washington on Monday as he welcomed a US delegation – which China said it “firmly opposed”. While Taiwan is not diplomatically recognised by the United States, Washington is a partner and its top weapons provider. The main message delivered by the American delegation was that US support was as strong as a rock, FRANCE 24’s Jan Camenzind Broomby reports.
