EU and EC Presidents

  1. Who is the president of the EU? The president of the council? I don’t think officially there is a president of the EU.

  2. How do people view the Presidents? The current one seems unpopular and the last one played a part in both Britain leaving and the toxic Brexit negations? Are they popular in their native countries? Do other people believe their is a bias towards their native countries?

  3. It makes no sense to list the PMs of member states as holders of the Council Presidency – especially after the official establishment of the European Council in 2009.

Until then PMs of the member state who held the presidency would sometimes unofficially be referred to as the “president-in-office” and would chair meetings of the European Council (gathering EU member state heads of state/gov) — although this would sometimes also be done by foreign ministers. However, there were no meetings of the Council that PMs would chair (chair of course being what is meant by “president” here”.) Each council configuration would be chaired by the relevant minister, who would also be referred to as the “president-in-office”.

Post-2009 PMs of the member state holding the rotating council presidency don’t chair European Council meetings, as this is of course chaired by the new permanent president of the European Council.

Tl;dr: You should only display the flag of the country for the rotating Council presidency. Don’t display the PM. It’s extremely misleading.
