I understand that he cost $85 millions pounds and his debut season was lackluster at best. But I’ve look at his stats this season and they’re pretty solid

EPL 19 apps

5 goals and 6 assists

EFL/Caraboa Cup 4 apps

1 goal and 3 assists

UEL 6 apps

2 goals and 1 assists

If we looks at these statistics they probably aren’t great if you compare him to Salah. But even if he doesn’t score all the time and misses sitters and he plays a huge role in this Liverpool team. He is like Bobby Firmino with these stats. Not incredibly lethal in front of goal but still very reliable when he gives his all

  1. >He is like Bobby Firmino with these stats.

How much did firmino cost? I’m guessing not 90 million…..

  2. I feel those stats would look even better if it was calculated to minutes rather than appearances. He’s often not always a starter and coming off the bench instead.

  3. He’s just compared to Haaland’s first season at City since they were the two strikers signed by the top two teams after a heated title race

  4. I think the issue is that he could have had so many more. He struggles with the easier chances but manages to score the harder ones.

  5. He would get less hate if he didn’t miss absolute sitters, I don’t watch too many Liverpool matches but the recent one against Newcastle he had a couple awful misses..

  6. He missed A LOT of goals that he really shouldn’t be missing. He’s in his head at this point.

    Buuuut.

The guy has crazy speed and he makes Liverpool much better because the opposing teams have to account for him being fast. He creates a lot of chances even if he isn’t getting all the goals and assets.

  7. I think it will click at some stage for Nunez and he will just tear it up, he’s all the ability in the world and affects games everytime he plays. Just needs to find those scoring boots which will happen at some stage.

  8. He’s also a victim of rivals needing someone to pick on. Salah? Van Dijk? Not as likely

  9. The problem with Nunez isn’t his stats, they’re more than acceptable. The problem is the absolute sitters he misses, which aren’t as readily captured by the stats. He feels to me like a truly, genuine world class talent who couldn’t finish a fish supper. He’s a real enigma. If he added finishing prowess to his game he would be a generational superstar.

  10. I think the majority of football fans don’t see the ability to GET chances as a skill.

This is despite it being something that only the elite strikers can do.

He also sometimes looks clumsy so he doesn’t really get credit for the games he gets assists, scores goals or creates chances because of the above.

Add to that fact he has missed so many sitters, and he is an easy target.

However, it is much more likely Nunez learns to score open goals than it is for another player to suddenly learn how create the number of chances he does.

So I think he will be considered a world class player by the end of his time at Liverpool.

  11. With 3 forwards its difficult for all to have leading GS numbers. His effort and affect on games is what is underrated. Bobby wasn’t one to have leading numbers but his affect on that attack was unquestionable. Don’t just look at stats….they can be very misleading, there is a reason he is adored by our fans

  12. Nunez initial transfer fee was actually 64 million btw, lol

That being said he still needs to work on his finishing/composure, but like the majority of Liverpool’s recent transfers, people will look back on his fee and realise it was great deal in a year or two

  13. Darwin cost £63.7 million which could rise to £85 million if add ons are met

  14. If you look at his statistics, the most notable thing is he underperforms his xG.

So it’s not just that he misses sitters, but that he consistently doesn’t bury chances that he should.

On top of that, he was very expensive and you can’t just handwave that away because everyone expects more from players who cost more. You can argue that his stats are OK for a premier league striker, and I’d agree, but I would expect better than just OK from one of the most expensive striker signings in that window.

  15. He’s not over-hated. I’d say most people don’t have any real opinion on the guy other than he’s pretty shit and a bit of a donkey. There’s plenty of more hateable players at liverpool if other fans wanted a liverpool player to hate.

Thinking he’s shit isn’t hating him and he only gets so much attention for being a bit shit because liverpool fans desperately try to over-praise every little thing he does because they understandably don’t want to admit that as things stand they’ve bought an £85 million dud.

  16. If he was just a little better at finishing, he’d be worth the money

  17. Finishing is something you have or don’t. I’m not saying it won’t improve but I always feel with him it’s always going to be semi erratic and lacking composure. That being said I think he’s a fantastic weapon, good physical profile, also with pace, and has great movement.

He’s a top class chaos merchant, and that’s definitely not something to be undervalued.

  18. Nah he’s over protected by Liverpool fans. He was brought in as a more traditional centre forward and he’s been shit at that…and now every week there’s people digging out new obscure stats to justify his latest shocking miss.

I’d have Gakpo ahead of him playing as a Firmino-lite false 9 than Nunez scoring 1 in every 5 clear cut chances.

  19. His first season definitely wasn’t “lacklustre at best”
