heute 19:00 Uhr vom 09.01.2024 Insolvenz bei Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof, GDL-Streik (english)

The nightly news with Mitri Sirin. Good evening, everyone. Katja has the sports later. Yes, good evening. Let’s take a look at tonight’s topics. The third bankruptcy in just a few years. Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof department store has gone bankrupt again. Thousands of employees are afraid of losing their jobs. Rail strikes ahead:

The train drivers’ union GDL will paralyse large parts of rail traffic from 2 AM onwards. Remembering a German football icon: The sporting world is in mourning for Franz Beckenbauer. An all-too-familiar state of uncertainty has returned for the employees of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof. Germany’s last major department store group has filed for bankruptcy again,

For the third time in four years. This development has illustrated just how badly things have gone for the department store chain. After Galeria Kaufhof and Karstadt’s merger in 2020, there were 175 branches across Germany. Many have had to close since then.

Last year there were 129, but there are now only 92 branches left. The store is now facing its third bankruptcy proceeding. This means that more than 15,000 employees are in fear of losing their jobs again. Sven Rieken reports. The winter sun is shining on one of the company’s lucrative stores,

The Karstadt in Hamburg’s city centre. It once had 1,000 employees, but only 250 are left. While sales are doing fine, customers are now having to enter a bankrupt store for the third time. I just got a customer card a week ago. I’m actually really depressed about this.

I hardly dare to hope, but somehow I think it would be nice if Karstadt Kaufhof could at least stay in town. This morning, bankruptcy proceedings were filed at the local court in Essen. Bankruptcy administrators and the store’s management have three major tasks: Rent must be reduced for all branches,

An investor must be found to inject the company with new money and it needs new ideas to attract new customers. However, this does not mean that all branches will remain. We have 92 branches today. These will continue to operate, but as I said, leasing talks still have to take place.

And then we have to act accordingly. René Benko did not deliver the expected changes, but made everything more complicated instead. Now the bankruptcy administrator has to negotiate rent reductions with lots of different sub-companies, and in some cases with their bankruptcy administrators, too. At least employees’ wages are secure for the time being.

We have an insolvency benefit period until the end of March. The agency has informed us that insolvency benefits will also be paid in these proceedings. Hope and truth are just across the street from each other in Hamburg’s city centre. This shuttered store is a constant reminder to the current employees

Of how things can end. Despite legal uncertainties, the GDL strike began as planned just over an hour ago. They started in freight transport. Passenger transport is to follow at 2 AM in the morning. However, the State Labour Court of Hesse has the final say.

A decision is currently being made there, on a complaint by Deutsche Bahn, which still wants to prevent the strike. Regardless of the outcome of the summary proceedings, Deutsche Bahn’s emergency timetable will apply tomorrow. Isabel de la Vega reports. The GDL wants to strike for more money,

But above all, for shorter working hours with full pay. An emergency timetable will now apply for millions of travellers. 80% of trains have been cancelled. Everyone has to reschedule, because everyone has been affected. Okay, some people can just do home office instead, but otherwise, it’s pretty hopeless.

I wanted to go back on Friday. I’ll probably go back on Saturday now. I wonder whether there couldn’t be other solutions that wouldn’t leave customers in the lurch. Clearly, there weren’t other solutions. The GDL rejected a new offer from Deutsche Bahn for more flexible part-time working options. The improved offer is not acceptable.

It states that the reduction in working hours must be self-financed. That is utter nonsense. It has nothing to do with our demands. Deutsche Bahn has been trying to prevent the strike by court order, up to the last minute. The Hessian State Labour Court is currently hearing the case.

Rail customers should now check the emergency timetable, and if their train has been cancelled, they can get a refund. Alternatively, tickets can still be used after the strike. In the current strikes, Deutsche Bahn is offering a suspension of the regulation that ties your ticket to a specific train and time.

This means you can use your booked ticket for a different connection. For example, if I’ve booked a regional train ticket, I can now take a express train free of charge. You can find more information about rebooking, refunds, and the validity of tickets on the Deutsche Bahn website. Too much bureaucracy and unfair payment.

GPs in Germany have recently been protesting these conditions time and time again, leading to a crisis meeting held today with the health minister. One result was an end to maximum fee limits. This means that GPs will no longer be allocated fixed budgets in future. These were problematic,

As the money was sometimes used up before the end of the quarter, and doctors then continued to work for virtually nothing. Heike Slansky reports. Whether they are GPs or specialists, many practising doctors are fed up. Too much bureaucracy, too little time for patients and too little income at the end of the month.

This is one of the reasons why thousands of practices went on strike before the new year. If a certain service is not remunerated, then it might no longer be provided. If I can no longer provide appointments because the money is not there, then there is a lack of care. Overcrowded practices,

Admission freezes and supply bottlenecks in some places spurred the crisis summit held by the federal health minister with doctors and health insurance companies. Lauterbach wants to make concessions to GPs, promising a new remuneration system intended to relieve them of economic pressure. A deciding factor for care shouldn’t be a calculation

About how often a patient needs to be seen so doctors receive their full fee. These quarterly and yearly flat fees will apply for an initial visit, but after that, decisions should be made on a medical level as to whether a visit to the practice is actually necessary.

Representatives for medical specialists have also called for capped fees to be lifted, but haven’t yet won the minister’s ear. If specialists no longer relied on budgets, there would be more appointments for patients again. This means that long searches for a specialist appointment could be over.

Of course, this also means that contributions to statutory health insurance may have to rise. The aim is to improve care, but at what cost? 2024 will be a major election year in Germany. That’s why many parties, including the Greens, have used their traditional retreats at the beginning of the year

To set out their main issues. Once again, they called for a statutory minimum wage of 14 euros. The last increase was largely swallowed by inflation, according to Green Party leader Lang. In addition, the party wanted a quick decision on deliveries of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.

Now to France, for a new political start. At just 34 years old, Gabriel Attal has become the country’s new prime minister, making him the youngest head of government in the whole of Europe. This was President Macron’s response to poor poll ratings ahead of the important European election and to disputes within his party.

Anna Warsberg reports from Paris on what is expected from this political shooting star and Macron confidant. Less than 24 hours after her resignation, former Prime Minister Borne handed over the office to this man. Gabriel Attal, 34 years old, previous minister of education, and now the youngest prime minister that France has ever had.

I want to tell the French people that they can always count on me, that the president and I will devote every second of every minute to them. He is known to be a close confidant of Macron. He is a media presence, eloquent and expected to bring new momentum. According to polls, Macron’s party

Is currently behind Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally Party. All this is taking place ahead of the upcoming European elections in 2024, also the year in which the Olympic Games are to be held in Paris. Macron will certainly want to present the country as united and capable of action at this event,

At least to the outside world. 2023 was a year of uncomfortable reforms. First with pensions, then the controversial stricter immigration law, which Élisabeth Borne had to push through without a majority in parliament. Gabriel Attal was there, watching. We’ll have to get to know Attal first.

He has had a very fast career so far. That’s why we can’t yet judge his ability to steer the state. It now depends on the new prime minister’s ability to organise majorities in parliament in the future. The success of Macron’s remaining term of office stands and falls with it.

Can the former US President Trump be prosecuted for events that occurred during his time in office? This was the issue faced by a federal appeals court in Washington, DC today. Although he was not summoned to the hearing, he attended in person. The hearing related to proceedings against Trump for attempted manipulation

After the election in November 2020. His lawyers argued that Trump enjoyed absolute immunity as president and could not be prosecuted for actions taken at the time. Federal Foreign Minister Baerbock is still on a trip to the Middle East. She visited the border to the Gaza Strip today.

In Rafah, Egypt, she called for easier access for humanitarian aid. Baerbock said it was unacceptable for trucks to be stuck for days on end. Before that, she met with her Egyptian counterpart and called for a ceasefire. Last week in Portland, USA: A Boeing 737 MAX had to make an emergency landing

With a hole in its outer wall. Shortly after take-off, part of the fuselage detached. Some of the 177 passengers on board suffered minor injuries. It is now clear that the Alaska Airlines plane was not an isolated case. Other airlines have also found loose bolts on their aircraft of the same type.

Thomas Gonsior reports. Part of an airplane was found in the bushes in a garden in Portland. A kind of door that bore witness to a near disaster. Four days ago, a 737 MAX 9 like this one took off. Seven minutes later, part of it fell off.

The passengers were exposed to the night sky at 5,000 metres altitude. There was a loud bang. It was incredibly frightening. Kelly Bartley was sitting three rows in front of the hole. Another passenger was closer. His shirt was pulled off his body. The seatbelt saved his life. The plane landed without further incident.

An investigation is now underway. Investigators have said that a panel on a possible emergency exit came loose. It had been locked, because it was not needed. All 12 fastenings came loose, so that the part flew out of the fuselage. As for the cause? Checks had been carried out regularly.

Wear and tear has likely been ruled out, according to experts. The aircraft was relatively new. It had only completed 230 or 240 flights. Therefore, it must have been a manufacturing defect. This means it’s possible that Boeing or another supplier was not up to scratch.

The same applied to other aircraft of the same type. Loose screws and parts were found on other airline planes as well. Affected airlines include Alaska Airlines and United Airlines. On the plus side… -There is no danger for travellers in Europe.

The number of 737 MAX 9s in this configuration flying in Europe is very low. There are a dozen. All of them are being checked. However, doubts about Boeing are not getting any smaller. South Korea is to ban the slaughter of dogs soon. Their parliament has introduced a law to that effect.

According to the law, the breeding of dogs for slaughter and sale of their meat for consumption will be illegal from 2027. Violations will then be punishable by up to three years in prison. South Korea has a long tradition of eating dog meat. There are still around 1,100 breeding farms.

Anyone who wants to know how we will live in the future should look to Las Vegas. There, at CES, one of the largest technology trade fairs in the world, many of the most important exhibitors proclaimed nothing less than the beginning of a new era. The era of artificial intelligence.

Indeed, more and more examples of AI are astounding us, especially in healthcare. Benjamin Daniel reports. Artificial intelligence. It feels like the headline of this year’s CES. Almost no product can do without it. For example, this mirror uses a facial scan to make statements about my state of health,

Blood pressure, cholesterol level, risk of heart attack and much more. I recently had some of my values checked by my GP, and the AI’s assessment was actually pretty accurate. During the scan, blood flow patterns under the skin are analysed. This allows conclusions to be drawn about vital signs or disease risks.

Although this is not a diagnosis, it is a precise risk profile. This drone transports laboratory samples and medications. It is quiet, fast, climate-friendly, and can dock on window sills for loading and unloading. Everything is fully automated. The AI can also lend a hand when there’s trouble in the air.

If something goes wrong for a parachutist, helicopter, airplane or paraglider, maybe they’ve lost their transponder, we can identify the problem with the help of artificial intelligence. Amidst all the technological euphoria, critical aspects tend to fade into the background. Nevertheless, developers are naturally also grappling with questions

About data protection and the dangers of AI. Who handles what data and how? Who develops these models? What do they do? We often don’t know. That’s why you have to think critically. But not necessarily fearfully, as we still have control over the systems. So it’s in our hands.

Hopefully, it will stay that way. Now for the sports news. Katja, the football world continues to mourn the death of Franz Beckenbauer. Yes, the “Kaiser” of football died the day before yesterday at age 78, and the number of people expressing their grief is growing by the hour.

Among them are many international football legends. A book of condolences will be available in Munich from tomorrow. Farewell to a football legend. Flowers at Bayern Munich’s Säbener Strasse office and at Franz Beckenbauer’s birthplace in Munich-Giesing. There are also mourners worldwide, reacting to the death of the “Kaiser”.

Gary Lineker called Beckenbauer “One of the absolute greats of our game”, “who won it all with grace and charm”. Lionel Messi also wished him a “rest in peace”. And David Beckham paid tribute to him as a “true gentleman”. He commanded great respect across all sports.

Dirk Nowitzki said: “He shaped the last decades like no other.” He was one of the greats. When you become such a sporting legend, it’s impressive when you remain a great person, like Franz did. Recognition for the shining star of German football. Even if there were shadows in this otherwise brilliant career,

A celebration in the Munich Arena would be a worthy conclusion for one of the greats. In handball, national coach Alfred Gíslason is not alone in his hopes for a winter fairytale. Tomorrow, the European Championship begins for the Germans in Düsseldorf with the match against Switzerland in Düsseldorf’s football arena.

Today, the final training session. Tomorrow, a new world record. 53,000 people: Never before have so many watched a handball match live. Left-back player Julian Köster is full of anticipation. Everyone is looking forward to this home tournament, the first game in front of such a record crowd. Conditions are perfect.

The match is against Switzerland. The DHB team won 18 of their last 20 matches. But beware, seven Swiss players play in the German Bundesliga, including top scorer Manuel Zehnder. The pressure will definitely be on the Germans tomorrow, because they have to win here in their own country.

But we’ve also set ourselves high goals. We want to beat the Germans tomorrow, and want to get through to the next round. For the Germans, losing is out of the question, as North Macedonia and Olympic champions France are still waiting in the tournament. We cannot lose against Switzerland,

As presumably even stronger teams await. So we know that the first game is a final. But we are prepared for that. They want a winter fairytale, just like in 2016, when Germany last won the European Championship. The game will be shown tomorrow on… ZDF? -Yes! Exactly. Thank you, Katja.

We recommend that you continue to bundle up. Christa Orben has the details in a moment. The “heute journal” will air at 9:45 PM with Marietta Slomka. Best wishes from all of us on the “heute” team. Thank you, and good evening. WEATHER REPORT Good evening.

This cold high is now shifting its focus a little further north, but that doesn’t change anything, as we’re still within its sphere of influence. This means the dry, cold winter days will continue. It may snow lightly again tonight between the Black Forest and Lake Constance.

In the north, the sky is often overcast due to fog, but otherwise, it will be starry. This means conditions will cool down again, mostly between minus 5 and minus 14 degrees, especially where there’s snow. It’s less cold directly on the water and on the Upper Rhine.

Tomorrow, the permafrost remains at minus 1 to minus 4 degrees. We only see slight plus degrees by the sea and in the lowlands of the south and west. As we saw today, the sun will shine often, and the unpleasant, icy easterly wind will weaken somewhat.

However, this also means that fog patches will become more widespread again, especially here in the northeast. Some fog patches remain in the southwest. Expect just 0 to 2 hours of sun tomorrow wherever we see these fog patches, but expect 6 to 8 hours in a broad strip in the middle,

Which is the maximum possible. We’ll see plenty of sun again in the centre and south on Thursday. From the north, however, it’s a little cloudier and also a little less cold. Bye.

! Finde den Fehler.
