Norway bans ‘dirty’ cruise ships | Focus on Europe
Majestic mountains jutting up from the deep blue water the F landscape on Norway’s West Coast is breathtakingly beautiful it’s a unique natural environment attracting tourists from all over the world many want to see the ganga Fjord most of all Frank Ola buak and make sure the giant cruise ships are able to
Dock for those of us living here the cruise ships are our livelihood whether we work in the harbor or sail with the tourists a lot of people live from tourism and have no Alternatives as soon as the ship has docked the tourists pour into the village shuffling between souvenir
Stores restaurants and Scenic Lookout points some 400,000 Cruise tourists visit this place every year but now Norway’s government wants to drastically reduce their numbers and above all ban pollution caused by marine diesel fuel starting in 2026 ships that burn this type of fuel will no longer be allowed to dock in the
Harbors cruise ships cause the world’s highest emissions per passenger and traveled kilometer and they pollute our FS that’s why all parties in the Norwegian Parliament have decided on zero emission policy for the industry this will be a huge challenge since most cruise ships still run on diesel but there are
Exceptions like the UIA docked in another port in the ganga Fjord Mikela franchon believes that emission free cruises are possible in the engine room the manager of the cruise operator shows off the company’s pride and joy ship engines that run on liquefied natural gas LNG it’s a big big step forward because
For the first time we we use a fuel which is not uh at ambient temperature but is actually refrigerated and this will open up the possibility for us to adopt in the future what we call alternative fuels fuels with much lower carbon intensity that’s more or less is
A first step of a of a journey replacing Marine Diesel with LNG means a significant ific reduction in emissions it also saves energy for the accommodation and Facilities on board since cabins and pools are heated using the ship’s engines but there’s still a long way to go before the control room can go
Without diesel altogether when there are very strong winds the captain can switch systems at the touch of a button one big too small if you flick this switch she would no longer burn the LG but it would go back to burning diesel which maybe would give
You a little bit more talk or reaction faster reaction times on the frosters frosters are on the the Ultra Modern vessel is the flagship of the fleet it cost around1 billion to build still this technology doesn’t go far enough for the Norwegian government if they want to come into our
FS they’ve backed the wrong horse because LNG is far from being emission free it’s maybe an improvement of 20 to 25% to other fossil fuels and that’s far too little until now only electric powered cruise ships like this one have been able to sail into the Fjord without emitting any harmful
Exhaust but the power in these huge batteries only lasts about 4 hours after that the ship relies on LNG the first steps toward making cruise ships Greener have already been taken but the technology still has a long way to go and if Norway’s government remains firm ganga will see significantly fewer
Tourists the port Captain thinks that will have a negative impact we’re aware that something has to be done for the environment but it’s all happened very suddenly and I can hardly imagine the consequences so I fear for the livelihood of those of us living in these f
The port captain and many residents are therefore hoping for a transition period so that tourists can continue visiting the ganga Fjord by ship for years to Come
Starting in 2026, only cruise ships powered by alternative fuels will be allowed to visit Norway’s fjords. Lawmakers want to protect the unique natural environment and stop marine diesel oil and mass tourism from damaging the climate.

Wow, these comments sure are full of pro-oil astroturfing.
Australia needs to do the same.
Last I checked there aren’t any battery or nuclear powered mega cruise ships. Sooo looks like they’re gonna get 0 tourists.
I think the world Europa is MScs flagship

I wish DW would do some more research with their videos. That politician just told the worlds largest bold face lie with the straightest face Ive ever seen. Cruise ships use marine diesel, true, but nearly all cargo ships and 100% of oil tankers use unrefined bunker fuel, which is unrefined crude oil. They are 1,000 times worse for the environment and all studies say so. Problem is cruise ships are an easy target, especially post COVID and are demonized. But it will be the economies of all these small towns that will collapse due to their ineptitude.
As the largest oil gas producer and exporter in Europe, Norway sounds pretty hypocrite and hubris…
Here is a suggestion. Norway builds acceptable ships for the fjords, and nominates dedicated ports for the transfer of passengers from banned cruisers. 😀😀 🇬🇧
highest emmisions in SULFER! not carbon or other emissions. its important to be specific
Great goals for Norway. Pity they don't mind continued oil extraction and export though, all seems very hypocritical
The irony of the woke norwegians…
It is good to bypass Norway,. Alaska, New Zealand, and Patagonia are better and less expensive.
Norway is going to lose a lot or money.
"stop marine diesel oil and mass tourism from damaging the climate". Fantastic hypocrisy (as usual) from zealots who can only afford their life style on the back of a massive industry extracting the oil they seek to ban from the sea. Who provide huge incentives for EVs sales, which are only viable due to Norway's vast opportunities for hydro-electric power generation.
Ironic
Lol maybe Norway should stop digging oil out of the ground if they are so concerned. They are like tobacco farmers claiming they are not responsible for lung cancer because they don't sell cigarettes.

Somebody must take the first step and Norway is showing the way to all of us. Thanks Norway!
We went to Norway in 2022 and we were in the lift and joined by a port official and a bridge officer and we overheard a conversation regarding this. The two said hello to us and carried on their day, although I do think they'll suffer hard from lack of tourism
Nuclear power maybe??
Norway is western Europe's largest oil and gas producer, with a total output of just over 4 million barrels of oil equivalents per day… more than Venezuela.
Geiranger will cease to exist as a town without tourists. It's as simple as that. As the gentleman said in the outset, The cruise ships are their livelihood and they have no real alternatives.
Politicians help to make locals poorer. What a shock. Green-madness again…
If they are already running on lng then the transision to burning hydrogen should be possible. tho im unsure of the costs and if its even possible to replace/retrofit the engine after the ship has been assembled completly
Imagine if 1 cabin is not cleaned while passing the border
Why aren't the leading polluting countries taking this seriously as Norway?
deep sea mining. fyi

Was that music in the beginning from assassins creed?

It is like a tsunami of old people when those arrive. Oh the future of humanity is the grays continuing to trample the world.
It is a step in the right direction, but a step made too soon. Cruise ships cost €100’s of millions to build/buy. You can’t just give cruise ship operators 2 years notice to change their fleets of ships. The impacts go beyond just the locals who will lose trade, cruise operators, tourists will all be affected. Realistically this law should be brought in some time after 2030. Hopefully, by then technological advancements will allow for more clean ships, right now realistically the technology isn’t there for the mass adoption of electric cruise-liners or freight-liners. Diesel will continue to be the best option for at least another 15 years.
There’s no way to spin it. The cruise industry is a cancer and it will take decades to ditch fossil fuels. The good side is that in 50 years the ships can sail closer to those beautiful mountain peaks.
Ezios family theme?
Now the norwegian state have to pay people compensation
Yet they recently voted to expand seabed mining…the hypocrisy….
Looks like arendelle without castle
Dictatorship, All the elites burn more fuel with their jets.

jumped straight to the comments to see about that music lol
First wondered why I got advertising, but then noticed the introduction music somebody apparently has to pay for 😉
Is it just me or is the music the assassins creed main theme???!!!
Norway to allow "I totally swear we're clean" ships only
To be honest, it is very short sighted forcing ships to use battery instead of allowing clean fuel like LNG, pollution caused by the batteries are far greater than burning LNG. As well as the extra weight (not a super big factor for ships, but the same argument is applicable for cars and even trains).
That said, some ships like Eruibia can generate power from LNG without burning it. (Erubia have such system, but it's auxillary power aside from burning the LNG). I sailed on MSC Euribia through the fjords, the newly built LNG ship mentioned in the video. And really hated when some other ships like TUI's Mein Schiff 4 (and other heavy fuel oil/diesel ships) sharing a dock with us. I remembered TUI's Mein Schiff 4 because we sailed about the same route, when they sail away earlier than ours, their smoke blows directly into our ship (which is bigger than their ships). Later onthey really are an eye sore. When our ship pulls in any port, it's clean, no smoke what-so-ever. When their ship pulls in (TUI's Mein Schiff 4), we can forget about taking pictures of the landscape for an hour (to wait for the blue-grey smoke to get clear…), and yeah, smell of fuel-oil…
No wonder why there was protest against cruise ships in Norway (especially before the lock downs which gave those a taste on how much cruise ship business and tourism in general mattered in Norway), but I hope LNG ships like Eruibia should continue to be allowed until alternative LNG power generation or even fuel-cell technology get mature. Rely on Li-on batters is just not sustainable on the long run.
I'm sorry, how does Norway afford all their beautiful EVs again?

I am surprised that cruise ships don't go nuclear. Nuclear has been used in many military ships for decades and such ships can run for decades on a single fueling and they don't emit a lot of carbon as the nuclear turns directly into electricity. Nuclear has been used on aircraft carriers and ice breaker vessels for over 50 years very reliably.
is bio fuel also forbidden?
