Historically other issues like M.E. and depression were regularly dismissed as being “all in your head”. I can only imagine there’s even more distrust when it comes to issues that only affect women.
The Vagina Museum website has a really good online exhibition about Endometriosis which also links to a great short film called All Up There about this exact issue. I recommend.
I am a younger guy that was told by a doctor that my anxiety, depression and headaches were in my head and caused by stress because I just graduated.
Imagine your health condition is even more niche specific to your gender. I bet people are told all the time that it’s in their head. We lack so much understanding of human health and prevention vs cure. We live in a cure over prevention society too.
The NHS referred my father to multiple psychologists in the late 90’s. Tried to convince him he was literally insane.
He was diagnosed with MS the early 2000’s.
My current GP (in a long line of crappy GPs) told me my time of the month is in the spectrum of normal. Mine are heavy enough to ruin clothes, bedding and keep me in the house four days a month but apparently it happens to every woman like that.
I have been incredibly lucky with my dr and specialist, I told them the issue, they scanned me, did some treatment, they didn’t work, cut me open and binned that bitch super quickly.. my friends have been through the ringer. I know two others that also had Endo, they were both waiting longer than me and one was told she was actually mentally ill.
Hah. I was told this by GPs for years. Was told 100 times that it was anxiety. Eventually ended up going private. The relief was real when the doctor told me I was riddled with it after a diagnostic laparoscopy. They treated it during the op but its sadly come back.
I shouldn’t be made to feel relieved that something is actually wrong with me but this is the world we live in.
I also have suspected thoracic/diaphragmatic endometriosis and it took coughing up blood in the Drs surgery for them to start taking me seriously on that. I’ve pretty much been told there’s nothing they can do (Northern Ireland).
Are these doctors morons? Do they not know the signs? It’s 2024, I thought the days of telling a patient their issues were in their head had ended
