So in a few places around my town the council are removing and shredding local shrubbery. Is their mentality really that it’s easier and cheaper to get rid of it than it is to maintain it? That doesn’t seem very ‘green’ of them… Or is there another reason for it?
Stevenage, Hertfordshire for info.

Cost probably
Bring me a shrubbery! One that looks nice… And not too expensive.
Visibility for drivers at the corner? All it might take is one crash where the driver says “I couldn’t see the other car because of the shrubbery!”
Often its a rat infestation..
The best way to get the answer to this is to ask the council themselves.
Roger’s Law
That’s at a junction so it’s most likely they did it in order to assist with drivers’ sightlines
Time for gorilla gardening
They have to pay someone every three months to trim it back every time it encroaches on the pavement. Remove it completely and they pay once. Any question of “why did the council do x”, the answer is always cost, because almost all of them are completely broke.
” shrubbery” , you say ?
The knights who say “nee!” must be applying political pressure
Are you demanding a shrubbery?
Tidying up dads grave
Maybe the local council is trying to bribe the knights who say ni?
Maybe people were using it to dump litter in, like empty drinks bottles and such? Though there is no evidence to support this theory.
Seriously though. No idea.
Probably sight-lines, or it was a problematic species
The Knights demand sacrifice and so shall it be!
So the road name isn’t hidden
It’s mostly done in winter months because maintenance to shrubs and bushes is restricted by law when it’s bird nesting season.
They’ll then sometimes cut it back to ground level to remove last year’s growth, regenerate and make new growth.
It’ll then require cutting back again for a few years and will just require pruning.
They can also clear any rubbish, weeds and other crap in the area when they cut it back like this.
Theft and Shrubbery.
Ni!
The flowers go nicely with the council’s eye shadow.
Contact the council and find out. You should be able to find which department is responsible from the website. Alternatively go though your local councillor, they would also be able to find out, and that’s what they’re there for!
Or, contact your local ‘newspaper’ and have a compo face moment pointing at a bit of scrubby ground.
People are saying it’s about drivers sight lines but Where I live this has happened with parks and other areas on roads that aren’t on corners.
