Minority in parliament and China’s threats: The challenges of Taiwan’s new government | DW News

In Taiwan the ruling Party candidate Li Ching has won the presidential election giving his party the DPP an unprecedented third term Le secured just over 40% of the vote ahead of his nearest rival in the opposition CMT CH China claims Taiwan as its territory and in the runup to the

Election called Li a dangerous separatist the US Germany and France are among the countries who have congratulated Taiwan on its successful election now let us welcome our next president and vice president and X the election is over the winner has been declared and people are moving on

With their lives after the vote in Taiwan My Hope Is that there will be peace and cross straight relations that there will be no political or economic threats to this island the Taiwanese public is actually not that nervous compared to the foreign media who think oh this is a scary

Place in Shanghai in mainland China some are hopeful too there might be a relatively rough period to maintain this status quo but I think because I have a few Taiwanese friends that they increasingly want to go towards the mainland I hope things will get better and better and both

Sides can one day be together the United States congratulated the newly elected president in a press release which didn’t go down well in Beijing China claims Taiwan as its own territory China’s foreign Ministry says the Taiwan question is China’s internal Affair whatever changes take place in

Taiwan the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China will not change in recent months Beijing has regularly provoked Taiwan militarily analysts are Keen to know what the new president’s policy towards Beijing will be I think they were also likely going to be instability

In Cross relations in the short term uh Beijing will likely want to use a further pressure uh be a minitary gry Zone Maneuvers to ret out tension or economic sanctions against select town is exports to the Chinese market or further marginalization and critique of Taiwan in both bilateral and potentially

Multilateral settings all as a way to exert further pressure against the next Taiwan government and then also through that to set the turns of interaction for the next four years of crossray relations between Beijing and taipe and just one day after the election China once again quietly rattles its saber

Beijing publishes these undated pictures of a military exercise appreciate that to discuss this further I’m John joined now rather by abig vaser she heads the Foreign Relations team at The meur Institute for China studies and joined us today from Berlin uh abig what do you make of China’s reaction to Li

Win I think um as of today the reaction of the Chinese has been uh pretty consistent with the past elections in Taiwan um in 2016 and in 2020 when the DPP won the election a similar reaction was observed so I mean the Chinese are consistent reaffirming their position

But also um highlighting the fact that the process of reunification has started for them and in the last image of the the reportage that you show we could already see a sense that there will be an escalation of tension at some point um and that we should be prepared for

That but at this point in time 48 hours after the election the reaction has been pretty mild and of course a big player in the China taiwana story is the United States uh the US congratulated the newly elected president uh and sparking China’s IR uh even though the United

States has said they don’t support taiwan’s Independence so why is Beijing annoyed Bing is annoyed because um Beijing and Washington do not share the same vision of where Taiwan is going for the Chinese the statement is clear you just need to listen to their leader um there will be reunification there will

Be reunification at all costs and with all uh means um this is on its way for the um United States the position is that um they want to maintain the statute quo in uh the straight in the Taiwan Strait and they want to maintain um the position of Taiwan as it stands

Right now and the US and a number of Lies have made clear that they would not accept the use of force um for reunification purposes um and that uh any change of the statute quo through force would not be acceptable so despite the fact that the US has provided China

With reassurances that they do not support uh Independence and the position of the American is very clear and very well known by China they will react in case of the use of force uh in the taiwan’s trade to change the status quo and Abigail if I could just ask you a

Brief final question uh asides from China what challenges does the government have to face ah um the DPP H one thing you need to know is that the DPP won the presidential election uh for a third term but but it’s a minority U now in uh

The parliament so they will have to work with others and I think that’s the first challenge that the current president is facing he has a pretty wide agenda ahead of him being on dealing with the housing crisis that they have in Taiwan uh the energy where he has um said that um the

DPP want to eliminate nuclear energy from Taiwan nule mix but highly dependent Island as you can imagine so he has domestic challenges ahead of him and not a parliament that will vote all his bills I’m sorry to cut you off we’re running out of air time we’ll talk to

You again soon abigel vaser thanks so much thank you

In Taiwan the ruling party candidate Lai Ching-te has won the presidential election giving his party, the DPP, an unprecedented third term. Lai secured just over 40 percent of the vote, ahead of his nearest rival in the opposition KMT. China claims Taiwan as its territory and in the run-up to the election called Lai a “dangerous separatist”. The US, Germany and France are among the countries who have congratulated Taiwan on its successful election.

  1. By electing the DPP ,Taiwan has now set the stage for it to be used as a military platform against China by the US after dumping Ukraine.Good luck to Taiwan!

  2. Technically the mainland is part of Taiwan too, the war never ended. Why does everyone speak as if China won the war.. they didn’t, otherwise Taiwan wouldn’t be a thing in the first place.

  3. "The US, Germany and France are among the countries who have congratulated Taiwan on its successful election."

Who are in these 3 countries' congratulate Taiwan? Certainly not the governments that didn't even recognize Taiwan as a country.

  4. The DPP suffered a swing of 17% against it from the last election. Their greatest threat is from the people of Taiwan. They are not buying the independence story anymore. Independence of Taiwan is dead in the water. Not from the NPLA but the people of Taiwan. Its over.

  5. Democracy is not a goal, it is a method! Most population in the west are brainwashed to believe democracy it's the goal and if you are applying a voting system you are superior to others and automatically booking better results. No, it doesn't.
Democracy, autocracy, meritocracy, a king … they are all system/method of human governing. None is better nor above others. The goal: get result!
Is your country moving upwards in the world power/wealth hierarchy? Do you have more purchasing power than you used to? Does your country have more influence than before? do you have more disposable income? Are younger generation better off than their parents generation? Do you live in a better surrounding? Is your neighbourhood safer then before? …. These are GOALS!
You cannot force others to a method however you can choose one or multiple for yourself depending on the situation. In this intensified geopolitically war world, you need to determine what are your priorities? Is your system more competitive and consolidated? Or you have chosen the opposite to make you feel better? You need to choose your priority and understand consequences.

  6. The president of Taiwan is Xi. They don't have their own independent government because they aren't an independent country under international law and never will be.

  7. The threat is coming from Taiwan itself who engaged with US to buy weapons … If both of them do not provoke China, there will be no issue … Get the fact straight do not spread lies and disinformation by flipping the narrative …

  8. Taiwan should learn what happened with Ukraine…there is no support anymore…the west will go away from Taiwan's back as well…they should take China as more of an ally than the west

  9. Only the western imperialists want war but these chinese both RC or PRC don't go to war. China will never bomb Taiwan until it declear independance that taiwan never do, China always play long game, winning the war without fighting, Within this decade EU and US will collaps. and then China do not need to invade.

  10. The Pacific island nation of Nauru announced earlier on the 15th (Monday) that it would cut off diplomatic relations with Taiwan and establish diplomatic relations with Beijing. The Taiwan government subsequently also stated that it would cut off diplomatic relations with Nauru.

  11. DPP is nothing but puppets of world terrorist whom bring misery through Lies Sanctions Coup War follow by looting like Syria Libya & Iraq where is Justice?

  12. The challenge is the new President lost the legislative and now there is no majority party. The two opposition parties will dominate the political landscape

  13. A pyrrhic victory for William Lai of the DPP…He only managed to get 40% of the votes as compared to the opposition 60%. This is a clear message the Taiwanese sends to the US and China. They don't want to be a puppet of the US and China…I guess they are smarter than the Ukrainian…

  14. The election is rigged in a way that 10% out of the 40% votes for the DDP comprised of Taiwanese living in America but have nothing to do with Taiwan otherwise, they don’t really represent the Taiwan people. Also Taiwan uses Google which has an algorithm called Ephemeral Subliminal Seduction that has proven in many countries to have swayed the votes in favour of who the US wants. Generally if you use America social media you are controlled by the CIA which uses Dominion voting machines technology to infiltrate the voting process.

  15. William Lie is disappointed by the US who reiterated that it won't support Taiwan independence. About the only time Taiwan becomes independent is when William Lie goes to bed.😂😂😂 Dream on William Lie 🤣🤣🤣

  16. How china can threat china?
Why DW can twist the narrative that taiwan is like a country, didnt DW know taiwan is a island call a republic china?

  17. Yes, the American take time off from supplying, financing, weaponizing the genocides in Gaza to congratulate Taiwan.

As for the French, now that it has been kicked out from looting in West Africa (getting Uranium at 80c/kg, normal price is USD 200/kg),

it has more free time to antagonize China.

Afterall, China is helping to grow the Middle East and African economy, doesn't sit right with these colonials power.
They think they still OWN Middle East and Africa..

  18. I am not sure the fact that 40% who voted for Lai is going to dictate the 60% of the people who didn’t want him is a “ successful” vote outcome, that’s not democracy, that’s veering towards plutocracy ( not there yet, but getting close), a minority taking all and dictating the majority kind of situation. Its a sign the Taiwan society is extremely divided, kinda like the US right now. Not a good thing, unless you believe US ‘s politics is in a good shape.

  19. "quietly rattles it's saber"! 😂😂😂 I cannot believe I am hearing this in my life! The western media always surprises me with their new ways of flirtation with the English language!

  20. No amount of diplomacy not economic cooperation will make PRC government a true ally of any nation! PRC government BORROWED and USED a FOREIGN IDEOLOGY that CORRUPTED Chinese culture and heritage!

  21. Germany have to support Taiwan to go independent, dont worry about Xi he is a weak leader and are not a war time leader like Mao. no harm will come from china. Just continue to poke china for a change in the leadership

  22. If you interview someone in China about geopolitics, especially with regard to Taiwan, there is no way you will get a straight answer from them if they disagree with China's motivations.

  23. One basic principle in election is that when you have three parties contesting two opposing poles, ie. whether to continue hardline against China or hold dialogues, the minority will always win. The reason is simple, the more popular preference is divided by multiple parties. In other words, if Ming Zhong party also chooses hardline against china, the outcome will become DPP 20%, Ming Zhong party 20%, KMT 60%. So in this election, although 60% of taiwanese want a more china friendly direction, they still lose to the 40% voters who want to continue the hostility.

  24. This title is misleading. The DPP has already been the governing party in Taiwan since 2016. How many times have I read this misleading statement since yesterday? Are the media outlets pandering to the PRC or do they want to make the news more dramatic?

  25. DPP is now a minority government. 60% opposition in legislature. Independence and support for USA is in decline, especially after Ukraine and Gaza genocide. Let peace and wisdom prevail. If anyone wants war; especially from thousands of miles away; they should be ashamed of themselves. Most Taiwanese don't want war. So lets stop supporting the US in trying to start another genocide.

  26. Taiwan status quo ? what is it ? when was it changed ?
I grew up with Republic of China (alias Taiwan) claiming all Provinces on Mainland China as parts of Republic of China, the legit China, . . . . . fastforward . . . . . Taiwan now claims it is independent and not part of China,
so WHEN was the status quo changed from being the legit China to not part of China ?

  27. Whatever the outcome of the election in Taiwan ,China will remained to its resolved for reunification in eigther way by peace or by force!

  28. Taiwan election was rigged by Dpp with help of western collaborators, but don’t worry China will be part of China sooner than later!

  29. A classic divorce. China is still in love with Taiwan – his money. China has a bad character. China does not deserve the money. Mao gave the money during the civil war to get Chiang out of China.

  30. The West oriented DPP got 40.1% of the vote, the pro China Nationalists (KMT) secured 33.5% and pro China Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) won 26.5%. on other words, 60% of Taiwanese want close relations with China, only 40% voted for the pro West party

  31. Xi is probably less concerned now than he may have been prior to the election. Thanks to the majority (about 60%) of Taiwanese voters who did not vote for the DPP, there is now little or no chance of US neocon driven secessionists within the DPP being able to cross China's 'red line'. Having lost their majority in the Taiwanese legislative assembly, DPP secessionists would find it difficult if not impossible to muster sufficient support for such a dangerous move.

  32. 63% vote to 57% vote for DPP.
    Support dropped.
From majority government to minority government.

Any self respecting NEWS channel would have found that out.

  33. 1) In 1894, Japan invaded China and Korea, the Qing govt was defeated and signed the [Treaty of Shimonoseki] to cede Taiwan Island to Japan.

    2) During the WW2, at the Cairo Conference held in 1943, China asked the transfer of Taiwan's sovereignty back to China after the war. This content was included in the [Cairo Declaration] and later reiterated in the [Potsdam Proclamation] that it should be implemented.

    3) In 14 Aug & 2 Sept 1945, the Emperor and govt of Japan issued the [End War Edict] and [Japanese Instrument of Surrender], Japan surrendered and accepted the [Potsdam Proclamation]. Japanese troops in Taiwan surrendered to KMT General CKS and Taiwan re-entered the territory of the Republic of China (ROC).

    4) Soon after that China civil war broke out in between KMT and CCP, the KMT was defeated and fled to Taiwan. However, due to US intervention, the CCP without strong navy at that time has no ability to unify Taiwan. The CCP then established the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. The civil war continues.

    5) In 1971, UN Resolution No. 2758 ruled that the PRC had obtained the representation rights and all legal rights originally owned by the ROC in the UN. That means the PRC is China’s only legal govt under international law and is recognized by 181 countries around the world, including the USA.

"The USA recognizes the Government of the PRC as the sole legal Government of China."
"The USA acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China."
Joint Cummunique on the Establishment of Diplomatic relations between the PRC and the USA in 1979.

Please refer to President Jimmy Carter's Speech on Relations with China.

    6) Therefore, according to international law, international reality, and the wishes of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, Taiwan should return to PRC and the PRC have every rights to protect it's sovereign integrity.
