How Ukraine deflects Russian missiles using electromagnetic signals | DW News

France’s new foreign minister has reiterated his country support for Ukraine during his first trip AB bod since taking office Stefan S said Ukraine is and will remain a priority for France his visit comes after another barrage of missile attacks by Russia overnight ke residents took shelter in the city’s Metro when Russia fired

Dozens of missiles and drones across Ukraine the Ukrainian government is asking for more air defense systems to defend itself against Russia attacks Marina Miron is a defense analyst with King’s College London I asked her what she made of the air strikes good evening Nick well um the

Russian strikes are a part of the newly commenced um air campaign that the Russians will be conducting in order to damage Ukrainian military industrial complex and in order to make the Ukrainian Armed Forces weaker the aim of the Russians is of course to um remove any possibility of a counter offensive

And to make it easier for the Russian forces to take more territories and to achieve the military and the political objectives so we’re likely to see more strikes uh for the coming uh months because the Russians will want to achieve air superiority or Air Supremacy

If they can in Ukraine and if you could just help us understand what’s actually taking place in the sky Ukrainian official said just eight out of 40 missiles in this latest barrage were actually shot down they say others were disabled using electronic warfare what does all that

Mean well first of all the missiles that were shut down they were shut down by the air defenses but we see that Ukraine is lacking air defenses and as far as electronic warfare is concerned it’s a Russian specialty actually it is um basically operations in the electromagnetic spectrum where where a

System would send out a signal in order to confuse the missile so to prevent the missile from um um detecting the target uh sending wrong measurements to it it’s also used to uh suppress Radars to jam GPS signals and this goes also for drones for instance as well so these are

These kinds of systems that the ukrainians have been asking for um in the United States but this is sensitive technology so Ukraine has to work with what it has in order to try to Jem Russian missiles and to prevent them from reaching their targets and and just briefly this new technology is Ukraine

Trying to develop its own uh while it waits for American and other supplies the ukrainians have captured some electronic warfare systems from the Russians and uh handling them to Nato in order to study but I’m sure that they kept some part upon which they can work because

Uh Western allies cannot um export this technology to Ukraine so Ukraine is on its own when it comes to the development of electronic warfare systems able to Jem Uh Russian Radars and Russian missiles okay defense analyst Marina Miron of Kings College London thank you so much thank you for having me

  1. The Russians aee formidabke in the electronic warfare. They play chess while Ukraine ia playing some kind of checkers…

  2. Oh? They attacking MIC now?
Not maternity hospitals, schools and random residential areas anymore?

You'll lose your job, dear Marina.

  3. Perhaps sit finally down with Russia on the negotiating table and finally promise to observe the Minsk agreement signed in 2014, then theres peace, never mind US and UK: They want the war to go on to the last Ukranian. Its good business.

  4. russia already has and had for a while air dominance. Patriot systems are useless and are blown up regularly. Nato knows that well. That is the reason they dont dare to attack this war. Nato has nothing in their arsenal to defeat Russia. Sour grapes at this pt.

  5. What makes this women an expert in air defense system😂😂? her masters in "American studies" and attendance in conferences 😂? with experts like this no wonder Russia destroyed Nato's pet project. what a joke the west became

  6. Well done Ukraine now Ukraine is totally safe from missiles, Amazing.. they dun need air defences anymore they can deflect all missiles incoming.. wonderful.. Ukraine is winning . So they dun need more aid?

  7. Deflection redirecting or hitting Russian projectors destined locked on Ukraine military targets ends up impacting civilian targets such as people's homes utility facilities or fallen parts on civilians !!!! .Protection of weaponaries over People's lives by having military activities within civilian populated areas also explains unintended harming of civilians by Russian projectors however very low casualty rate as fall out result of this conflict .If you wana know what deliberiate targeting Genocide of civilians is then check out 25000 plus Palestinians killed over 3 months with less than 250 Hamas fighters casaulties !!!! For every thousand Ukrainian Military being killed and injured 10 civilians are fatally injured in Ukraine and 90% are Ethnic Russians of East and Southern Ukraine in firing line of conflict !

  8. There are some misleading comments here. Ukraine said they used EW to take down some of the Russian missiles. Which is likely true since EW can be used to confuse drones such as the Russian Shahed which have been using Ukrainian sim cards to connect to Ukrainian cell towers. As well Marina pointed out that Russians have a specialty or advantage in terms of EW in general but this doesnt mean Ukraine isnt doing a good job in EW.

  9. US citizen, author and journalist Gonzalo Lira died in Ukraine while in custody. He was harassed, arrested and tortured by the Zelensky regime after revealing the truth about the United States' proxy war. He was placed on a kill list by the Ukrainian government. Stop financing Ukraine…
The reason why Gonzalo Lira ended up in a Ukrainian prison was because he told the truth about the situation in Ukraine. His failed policies and corruption plus the actual progress of the war. The reason he stayed in prison was because of the Biden admin. he also did not want the truth about Zelensky and Ukraine to come to light. His death is proof that Ukraine never cared about democracy and truth. It was about lies, corruption and now we can add Gonzalo Lira to the long list of deaths in Ukraine. This death is the fault of the bidet administration and the Zelensky .

  10. I’ve heard EM techniques have traditionally been a focus of Russian research. Good to hear Ukraine is innovating also.

  11. America's Republicans are compromised by Russians, and NATO is two disjointed to fight a proxy war. Things not looking good.

  12. Not a very accurate analysis. How many maternity hospitals, apartment buildings, kindergartens and schools have been hit 'accidentally' by Russia whilst trying to target military objects? It happens too often to be random, or air defence. Russia does target military infrastructure, but as often, it targets residential areas where high civilian casualties will affect the population and try to influence calls for peace.

  13. DW : 2:46 They should NOT be talking about Ukraine's capturing Russian Electronic Warfare Systems (EWS) and Ukraine trying to use the technology…on U tube….Why ? It's just Bad Business to do during this war. Could end up being harmful.

  14. The Ukrainians: "hmm we don't have a navy, so let's take out the Russian navy. We don't have dominance in the air, let's take out the Russian air force…" – Putin: "everything is going according to plan".

  15. It's encouraging to see France's new foreign minister, Stéphane Séjourné, reaffirming the country's support for Ukraine during such challenging times. Ukraine's ongoing struggle against the recent barrage of missile attacks from Russia is a cause for concern, and the solidarity of international allies is crucial.

The resilience of Kyiv residents, seeking shelter in the city's metro during the missile attacks, showcases the need for increased air defense systems to protect against such threats. It's essential for nations to come together and address these security challenges collaboratively.

Looking forward to the insights of defense analyst Marina Miron on this latest Russian air offensive, it will undoubtedly shed light on the implications for Kyiv and the ongoing efforts to safeguard its sovereignty.

  16. the Russians released dozens of packages throughout Ukraine, but only the people of Kiev took refuge in the metro? and the rest looked into the sky with their mouths open? Do you know that in Kyiv many stations are closed due to flooding. Well, Kyiv claims that everything is being knocked down… look at the briefings of the Kyiv military. By the way, are there any video reports of where the Russians ended up? just show everything – don’t hide anything

  17. Ukraine has been defending itself with one hand in its back in many ways including EW, yet we expect extraordinary results.

  18. Hmm, “Russians are specialists in electronic warfare systems”, but their most advanced piece of this technology, the electronic surveillance plane A-50 was just shod down by the Ukrainians. The facts say they are “specialists” no more.
