**TLDR:**
* **Israel dropped leaflets asking Gaza’s residents for help finding the remaining hostages taken by Hamas.**
* **132 hostages taken on October 7 remain unaccounted for, Israel says.**
* **The death toll in Gaza has topped 25,000 amid the continued bombardment of the besieged enclave.**
Makes sense. The sooner the general population turns on Hamas the better off they’ll be.
Getting the desperate population to turn on Hamas is probably the best bet Israel has atm
They are already winning on the ground, when Hamas falls it’s going to be an insurgency, and an insurgency is infinitely easier to deal with when the population turns on the insurgents
I don’t see it happening tbh. Even in the face of Hamas digging up their water pipes, stealing their food, and using apartments to launch rockets, the citizens still helped returned escaped hostages to Hamas, and some citizens even entered Israel after the Oct 7th attack to kidnap young women.
They clearly value Hamas mission over themselves and their own children

Gaza Health Ministry was claiming that there where 800 people dead after IDF strike to Al Ahly hospital while
-Hospital building was not damaged at all, rocket landed in nearly land and even there was not so big radiuses of damage
-This was Islamic Jihad rocket that was literally landing in Gaza in livestream fore arabic media
So lets have a bit of disbelief in ruled by hamas health ministry.
I mean look at where siding with Hamas got them.
It looks like they’re trying to prevent needless deaths which will drive the “Israel is calling for genocide” crowd nuts.
Fantastic idea! Bomb us non stop and kill atleast 25k of us and then ask for our help. That’ll surely work.
Of course they care about their citizens unlike Hamas.
I bombed you and killed your family but can you help us find a few people.
I hope at least Israel rewards whoever finds the hostages from the Palestinian side, either by Israeli citizenship/protection or some form of appropriate compensation. I’m pro Israel myself but I find this very hard to do given the extremely destitute situation Palestinians are in due to Hamas.
They seem to have no problem gassing, bombing and even shooting their own hostages. We have video evidence of that.
Asking people to help you while literally massacring them is a whole new level of depravity.
I guess the Palestinians shouldn’t have started that war.
Once all the hostages are rescued (or killed), there’s nothing to stop Israel from flattening Gaza.
Is there a reward? Or just a missile striking their homes.
Who is providing the Gaza “death toll” numbers? Hamas?
Gazan “civilians” have captured escaping Israeli hostages and dragged them back to Hamas terrorists. The Palestinians are directly complicit in Hamas’s terrorism. These leaflets are a complete waste of time.
Israel seems to be going about this bass-ackwards…
Considering how hard the IDF has worked to endear itself to the Palestinian people, I’m sure they’d be happy to help.
Aren’t the Gaza civilians holding hostages, and didn’t Gaza civilians catch and return some hostages who escaped back to Hamas?
My point is, Gaza civilians seem to be very much on the Hamas side.
I doubt it will work but it’s a good reminder to the Palestinians that they started this war and can end it at any moment by surrendering and releasing the hostages.
Well, it’s going to be a tough sell to convince Palestinians to help you when you’ve spent the last few months causing wanton death and destruction in Gaza. Hamas might be bad, but if you’ve seen Israeli bombs blow up your apartment or IDF troops bulldozing your ancestor’s graves, you’re going to actively hate the Israeli government.
Since this was posted by /u/thisisinsider themselves, I would like to ask them directly. In the article, when talking about the number of casualties, they say:
> The [Gaza Health Ministry] does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its death toll but says around two-thirds of those killed were women and children, which is supported by United Nations estimates.
The “United Nation Estimates” is hyperlinked to a UN Women press release that leads with the numbers that reflect that two-thirds estimate. However, those numbers are footnoted with their source…which is the Gaza Health Ministry.
This is circuitous sourcing. The UN is cited to support the Health Ministry’s claim, but the UN is using the exact same source.
This also seems to go against the SPJ Code of Ethics as the source is *not* clearly identified and is *not* an original source; indeed, the true source is obfuscated behind a more recognized institution who are just repeating the same stat from the same agency.
In practice, this is deceptive to the reader as it imparts the idea that the estimate has been independently verified by an institution as generally well-recognized as the UN when no independent estimate has been made.
Does Business Insider have a response to this?
this comment section is whack
They’re “under siege” because they’re holding hostages and many are being held by “civilians”, including UNRWA staff
If Palestinians cared about their own families as much as they cared about wiping out the Israelis we wouldn’t be in this situation
‘1,200’ here, ‘20,000’ there.
People taking about proportionality amazes me. Of course, it’s easy to think of it being merely used as an excuse, but I’d say this to every single person here:
If your family members, the people who you care about above everyone else in the world, were being held captive by a group known to commit torture, rape, and extrajudicial execution, just how many deaths would you allow before deciding that your family should be left to their fate?
I’d put it that most people, if they had the means and opportunity, would have absolutely no limit for getting their loved ones back. Yes, Israel is being heavy-handed, and much of it is likely an excuse, but anyone claiming that the love for their family members’ return would be limited by the number of deaths on the other side is a liar.
Once Hamas releases the hostages, Israel’s rationale for continuing is severely hindered, and then we can talk about proportionality without being hypocrites.
“Find these people for us before we kill you. Kthxbye!”
I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to help the country currently bombing them.
I don’t think the hostages may be alive anymore.
This conflict is a zero sum game sadly.
I say it’s better not to take sides in this religious war.
Hamas probably shouldn’t have done 10/7 and taken those hostages
