Gotta elect more Dems to do that. Biden was able to raise the corporate tax by adding a corporate minimum. But we could get a lot more done with a d House and without having to rely on Manchin or Sinema in the Senate
Many people think that the wealthy should pay more tax and we are all very correct
Fund a campaign to do so. California has ballot initiatives. So do other states. Or maybe just shut the fuck up, Bill.
He is alone. His wife left him a couple years ago
He should put his money where his mouth is and start financially attacking the causes of the other conservative billionaires who are corrupting the government. It would not take long for conservative media to start roasting him like they do Soros and making him into a stochastic terror target.
I think they should too. These are the people who take resources from the Earth, pollute and thrive off the working class. To date, for all of that, they have had to give very little back. That needs to change.
I’m no accountant, but could he not increase his own percentage of taxes paid by not taking any deductions and converting his capital gains into actual income year-over-year?
Seems like yet another billionaire trying to generate good publicity by not actually doing anything
He could always just donate his money to the federal government. Pay.gov
Bill Gates says and does things in the interest of Bill Gates and no one should ever forget that.
Every year at Davos they say the same thing!
And than go and pay lobbyists to fight against taxes!
Publicly. He says this publicly. Show me where he’s working to make this a reality
Says a member of the billionaire class that has bought politicians for years to pass laws reducing taxes for the billionaire class.
Feels like some people would rather he *didn’t* say this. I don’t get it. Are we supposed to want billionaires to support bad things rather than tepidly support good things?
The only thing I fundamentally disagree with Bill here is he thinks it’s “generosity” and not an “over-abundance of control and power funneled into the people who made this mess possible in the first place”. Setting things right shouldn’t be considered “generous”.
Revert Reagan’s corporate tax cuts.
If he actually wanted that, he would put those billions into campaigning and lobbying for it, because unfortunately that’s how our system works.
Sure he does… lol. This is coming from a guy who was shamed into becoming a “philanthropist”.
We need to stop handouts to the rich and various companies first.
Super-Wealthy should stay the fk away from owning politicians. They are doing a lot more harm than not paying taxes.
How about better wages and more jobs !
These guys weren’t saying this when Bernie was leading in the polls
💯 they should. Some have made billions from government contracts and subsidies.
So do it. They won’t stop you from paying more taxes.
Billionaires should not exist.
Nothing is stopping him! They won’t refuse the check.
Everyone with $1billion+ net worth pays 30% wealth tax taking from their net worth not just income
Here to downvote anyone who trots out the bs line “Well, he could just pay more then!” Everyone knows him paying more alone is meaningless and he’s saying ALL billionaires should pay more. Whatever his reasons are, he’s correct. They should.
They say this but when is comes to supporting progressive candidates they are often missing and instead funding enlightened centrist.
I don’t want the super-wealthy to be taxed just so more money can be squandered by government. Id prefer the super-wealthy do what they should do and thats create jobs, which would lead to more people paying taxes.
I’m also cool with them paying more to their employees.
The super-wealthy should also pay their workers more and their CEOs less.
What I think often gets missed in this conversation is *why* the rich need to be taxed more. It’s not necessarily because the government needs, or will get, any more money.
In 1963 the top marginal tax rate was 91%, and between 1936 and and 1980 it never dropped below 70%. The great American postwar economy occurred during a time when there was a confiscatory top tax rate. [https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/statistics/historical-highest-marginal-income-tax-rates](https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/statistics/historical-highest-marginal-income-tax-rates)
The reason this matters: when the top rate is this high, it doesn’t make sense to pay people more than that, since that money would just go to the government anyway. So a CEO making 2 million doesn’t demand 10 million, because over 2 million, they can’t keep it anyway.
That is why employees previously got a bigger share of the pie, and that is why they don’t now. In order to keep from getting squeezed from the top, you need a limit on the share of earnings the people at the top can make. A high marginal tax rate for the top tier is how you do that.
