Excellent photo. I wonder why they built their city so high in the mountains.
You know, it’s easy to imagine people from so long ago as being very, very different.
We only see people from 100 years ago in black and white photos and movies, so they seem… outdated. People from even longer ago we only see in paintings, which seem even more outdated.
People from antiquity we only see as statues, which are the ultimate “old school” rendition.
But seeing such a large theater (it’s hard for me to estimate the number of places, but I’d guess it was in the low thousands?), I can imagine that plays were a huge social event.
People would be excited about going, dress up for the occasion, the whole shebang. The building itself most likely wasn’t a pile of rocks and rubble, it was probably painted, decorated with materials which have since decayed or been stolen. We know that for example ancient temples were often very colorful and full of life.
So the entire thing was as much of an event as going to the theater is today, especially if you know you’re going to a good play with famous actors.

And that feels really… modern, somehow 🙂
