apparently the site itself is extremely significant to hinduism.
Jai Shree Ram
Jai shree ram
All these religions claiming to be religions of peace, yet so often their religious sites just *have* to be built on top of the sites of other religions.
They remind me of small children scrapping and yelling over a toy that they only want because another child has it. I hold them in complete contempt.
Big achievement
This is a symbol of pure religious nationalism and a foreboding indicator for India’s future.
Religion is outdated and obsolete, the quicker the religious minority realise this and move on the better. Eventually with next few generations religion will go extinct inevitably. Hopefully in meantime there are minimal deaths caused by conflicts and minimal exploitation of misguided people by populist leaders.
Unfinished but Modi wanted to open it during an election year to rile up his base.
Ewww religion.
I recommend tearing down every religious building and replacing them with libraries. Religion is cancer.
When he sent a moon landing mission, I thought he went for a science victory, but he needs Mars aquaponics to achieve that. Now he is switching to religion victory I guess.
Posting this during the night across the western world and midday in India was a mistake lol
All you’re going to get is Modi’s bots spamming Jai Sri Ram and ignoring any valid criticisms
Or you know – invest in raising the living standards of your population
I don’t consider the promulgation of any religion to be a triumph, less still where that promulgation is pursuant to a State agenda which seeks to elevate that particular religion in a manner that runs a real risk of compromising secular government and the separation of Church and State.
That said, by all means demolish the mosque which supplanted an earlier temple, but replace it with something of public, secular utility. Perhaps housing, or educational or health facilities.
Once again proving that religion, outside the boundaries of one’s home and one’s very intimate personal beliefs, is extremely cancerous to the society at a large. Note – I say religion in a generic manner. No hate to any particular one.
I was waiting for the NYT article. They never miss.
To all the people who aren’t from India. This is not Modi opening a giant temple and India stopping from being secular. The temple was constructed after supreme court of India gave its decision in favour of Temple’s construction, A mosque too is being built. It’d be the largest in India, more beautiful than the Taj Mahal. Jai shree Ram.
What a toxic headline. That temple is as significant to Hindus as mecca medina is to Muslims or Vatican City is to Christians

*closes article without reading*
Getting real bad vibes from that title. The canary in the coal mine of biased language is dead.
Curious how the headline is worded. Would the NY Times ever care to call any middle-east country ‘Islam-first’ ? Because they absolutely are.
A giant temple that is not fully constructed, the 4 seers/shankaracharya’s not attending the opening and saying that opening the mandir by Modi is against Hindu shashtra’s Not to speak that a prime minister of a supposed secular democracy is involving himself in religious proceedings The Hindu far right wing organisation that conducted a terror attack and demolished the mosque there which kicked off riots across the country causing thousands of deaths
Ofcourse RW Indians/BJP supporters laud this while completely okay with Modi ignoring an Indian state in civil war since may 2023, destroying any democratic institutions there is, using said institutions to clamp down on opposition, and using his capitalist friends to buy out media houses that would report against Modi. Sooner or later, India will go back to casteism, because that’s what Hinduism is about, there’s a reason why Hinduism didn’t spread and it wasn’t because they didn’t force people.
There are multiple temples in India that were Jain or Buddhist temples but destroyed and built as Hindu temples, but I’m sure this is a conversation the RW won’t have
Correction: Not “hindu first” India, but rather “hindu also” India. Previous Prime Minister is on record stating that muslims have the first right on the resources of India.
In India, even the law is special for Muslims wherein they are allowed to have multiple wives and divorce them at the drop of a hat, temples are taxed while mosques are not etc. etc. There is a huge list.
Any demand for equality, uniform law, justice, not tolerating the intolerance etc. etc. by Hindus is projected as persecution of the so called “minorities” (which is what we see in europe too now) who in reality are the second largest group in India and have been oppressors for generations before the British took over that job.
the temple was not built by the government. the government only gave one rupee for the construction and the rest of the money was collected via crowdfunding. those who wanted to donate, donated for the temple.
the ram temple in ayodhya was destroyed by islamic invader babur in the 1500s and a mosque was built on top of the temple in order to humiliate the hindus. this site was as important and holy to hindus as mecca is to the muslims and jerusalem to the jews. this temple has been rebuilt after taking permission from the supreme court of india and a different plot has been provided for the muslims to build a mosque
this article is so biased its funny lmao
Modi didn’t “open” a giant temple. It is literally the most significant sight in Hinduism which was destroyed by Mughals and now restored.
Headline is weirdly worded.
Just a comment from a non-Indian passing through…
NY times at it again with it shit journalism without knowing or presenting the entire story behind it.
The site where this temple was build has long been the reason of religious conflict in India. The site was one of the holiest places for Hinduism in par with Vatican for chistians or mecca for Muslims. But later with Arabic empires establishing in India, a mosque was built there. And because of this there was years of religious violence there.
To resolve this there was a case that was contested in court for almost a decade and extensive research was done whether the place was actually the original holy place which Hindus claimed to be. And note that researchers not only consisted of Hindu scholars but Muslim scholars too who also concluded that the place indeed was an original holy place for Hindus and hence the Supreme Court gave the verdict to build this temple.
And note that even though it was ruled that the place that originally had a mosque to be given to build this temple at the same time another land was also given to Muslims so that they can too build a new mosque which is going to be the largest one India there not far from original place. And the infrastructure that was used to build this temple will now also help to build the same new mosque too.
According to my opinion(and note that I am actually an athiest), there couldn’t have been a more democratic way to resolve this decades long of religious issue.
Next should be the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. The 4 religions of the world symbolizing the 4 winds of the earth.
Closed the article before even reading. Total bait.
Important point is it was not taken with Brite force has gone through court being a Hindu majority, speaks volumes of tolerance .no other majority countries has such scenario I guess
US keeps peddling such bullshit propaganda and fake news against India and then when India doesn’t outright support them during global issues like the Ukr-Rus war for eg., they act surprised.
Fucking NYT and their stupid paywalls…
Title is misleading, probably by some butthurt jihadi, please if you want to know the history behind it, go and read something about ram janmabhoomi, you will get to know the reason behind construction of this temple.

It seems there was a hindu temple put there in the 12th century, but it was replaced by a muslim empire with a mosque several centuries later.
