Hello!

I’m a descendent of Swedish immigrants to the United States, being about four generations removed from my ancestors, who made the pilgrimage. Today I was given this Bible that belonged to my great grandmother Hannah.

The whole Bible is in Swedish, so I can’t read it, but I would love to know, at least what is written on the first page here. Would any of you be so kind as to translate for me?

  1. Hanna Björnsson

    For the confirmation

    Job 6.67

    April 12th 1912

  2. Björnsson = Son of the bear

QED: You great, great, great, great, great grandfather was a bear

  3. Just wanted to note that her name was Hanna, not Hannah.
Hannah isnt a swedish spelling and it was definitly not a thing in sweden a hundred years ago.
Just wanted you to know that.

    Have a beutifull day! 🙂

  4. It’s worth a note that the date written in the bible is written in English, not Swedish! It would say 12 april 1912 if it was in Swedish, not April 12 th.

Giving a bible like this is a typical confirmation gift in Sweden. (Nowadays the 14 year old usually gets a bible directly from the Church of Sweden, not from family members.) Joh 6:67 (Johannesevangeliet = gospel of John) is pretty common, especially in a church or to a person that thinks mission work is important!

  5. Perfect timing. I just read the emigrants series by Vilhelm Moberg. I strongly recommend it.

  6. Weren’t the pilgrims in the 1600s? You mean migration.
