This sounds like the militarisation of the EU is commencing, under the guise of defence and rapid action.
I like how they’re going to make sure those, not wanting in, can stay on the sidelines.
A bit weird that France is missing.
Yes something nice for parades and show.
This though ensures it’ll be nothing
Meanwhile, Germany’s far-left Left party immediately denounced the plan, saying that leaders were drawing the wrong conclusions from Afghanistan.
“The EU does not need a new intervention force. The EU should be a civilian alliance,” deputy party head Tobias Pflueger told dpa. The problem in Afghanistan was that nations had attempted to “democratize a country by military means,” he said.

Why am I not surprised that, despite all the posturing France does over this, they aren’t interested in joining this sort of thing unless it comes with a big arms deal attached for them?
Hopefully most EU countries will join the initiative: we need an EU Army, and the sooner that we can start working towards it, the better.
*The gang never deploys it*
It’s a small first step. Hopefully to be followed by more.
A lot of these articles mention afghanistan as motivation. But just what would these countries have done in afghanistan if they had an EU army, would they have tried to beat back the taliban and mire themselves and their soldiers in an occupation for another 20 years?
good initiative, but having anti eu slovenia on board isn’t very helpful
Is it a permanent group or still rotating? And will they wear the EU emblem? Are the controlled solely on EU level? That would be great!
Once needed, it will fall apart like every EU promise.
And, I mean, who want’s to rely on these guys in a fight situation:
Germany’s army is so under-equipped that it used broomsticks instead of machine guns
Germany, Netherlands, Slovenia, Portugal and Finland? What an odd mix.
Is the Union as a whole lukewarm on the idea, hence the lack of take up? Or else why is it this combination of countries?
I think the fact that Finland is part of it deserves more attention than it has been given by this sub, after all they are next to Russia and have historically been neutral because of that.
The EU is going to do what it always does. Fuck something up badly, then use that as an excuse to do things properly.
Due to the subject matter, I expect this involves people dying.
