Both are entertaining in different ways. Maher is so niche that he would not have done well w the SNL crowd IMO. Norm was the best update host in the entirety of the show so it worked out.

Yeah and to skip to the end of his time at SNL. Something not many know. They originally came to norm and were giving him a warning they wanted to “get rid of jim Downey”. Norm replied that “if you get rid of him you get rid of me”. That was that. He basically quit. I’m sure the OJ thing didn’t help, but I dont know if he ever would of lost his gig if it wasn’t for Downey. Mabey they fired Downey because of the OJ jokes?? Anyways, He NEVER told Downey himself. What a way to keep a secret. He was good at that.
