  1. ***The Telegraph reports:***

Foreigners could be allowed to join the German army as Boris Pistorius, the country’s defence minister, tries to recruit an extra 20,000 troops in the face of threats from Russia.

“We would not be the first armed forces in Europe to do that,” Mr Pistorius told the German newspaper Tagesspiegel, as he confirmed the idea was being considered by the government in Berlin.

Under German law only citizens can serve in the Bundeswehr in principle, though foreigners can be allowed to join in certain special cases, according to Bild, a German tabloid.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Bundeswehr has stepped up recruitment efforts to meet its new target of 20,000 extra troops, with a series of advertising campaigns targeting Generation Z, as well as plans to allow flexible working.

Germany would not be the first EU country to adopt a policy where foreigners can join the military. Denmark currently allows foreigners to enlist if they have a work or residence permit. Spain and Slovakia also allow foreigners into the army if they meet certain conditions, according to Euromil, the European Organisation of Military Associations and Trade Unions.

In France, men aged 17-40 can join the French Foreign Legion provided they can stomach its famously gruelling selection and training regime. However, only UK and Commonwealth citizens are allowed to serve in Britain’s Armed Forces.

Mr Pistorius has already warned that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin may decide to attack a Nato country within the next five to eight years.

“We have to take into account that Vladimir Putin will one day even attack a Nato country,” he said. “Our experts expect a period of five to eight years in which this could be possible … at the moment I don’t think a Russian attack is likely.”

  2. as a german with a foreign father this actually sounds reasonable and good as long as its based on Resident Permit. Can someone tell me if Pistorius did some bad things because everything ive seen of him was really good so maybe theres somenthing im missing because imo he would maybe be a good bundeskanzler canidate

  3. Hmmm Germany recruiting and arming foreigners to fight against Russians? Sounds very 1940s /s

  4. They can bring the folks from Gaza. They don’t mind going on suicide missions and it seems like the Germans like them, so much so that they let them grow rampant on the streets of large cities like Berlin and harass Jews with no consequences.

    It’s a win-win situation right there.

  5. Start with recruiting from the EU. Could be a German-funded effort in another step toward a European Army.

  6. Is this the final solution of modern immigration crisis? /s

  7. All of a sudden everyone is panicking about Russia striking Europe… But what’s the basis for that? I truly don’t get it.

  8. >only UK and Commonwealth citizens are allowed to serve in Britain’s Armed forces

Plus the Republic of Ireland and Nepal. Britain has 59 countries and 2.67 billion people it can recruit from.

  9. It’s mad, they have no need to do this.

They no (I’m sorry but from experience) that as nation – they are capable of doing this alone.

Same with the rest of Europe.

    What weird times…

  10. This has some Roman Empire vibes. This is one of the ways the Romans were achieving their military goals. Serve under the empire, become citizen after a bunch of years.

  11. A lot of so called nationalists here are acting like they would die for their country, but would rather be keyboard warriors on reddit than actually enlisting themselves. Letting foreigners fight for your country lmao, fake ass nationlist.

  12. With all those articles talking about the possible menace of a direct war with Russia it makes me wonder I mean… everybody is saying that we should get prepared does it mean they know something we don’t ?

Is war with a full engagement of NATO against Russia and by extension China is not that far ?

    I’m 35 and I remember thinking when I was 25 war in Europe ? Naaaaah… and today I’m like well… it’s only a matter of time…

  13. That would increase the amount of personnel of the Bundeswehr from 180k to 200k. Meanwhile Russia has over 1 million active duty soldiers. It won’t be just Germany that needs to step up to the plate.

  14. Why, let’s recruit Muslims. They don’t even bomb their own cities

  15. So Germany wants their own *Deutsche Fremdenlegion* and to have them fighting Russians if needed? What year is this?

I mean if they give citizenship after contract like FFL does it, then perhaps it makes sense.

However German job market is already very hungry. So why would someone join German military forces and possible getting killed for Germany. When you can get a job, earn more and have no worries about dying or getting conscripted.

  16. FFS!💩🤣 And people are wandering why the extreme Right is getting stronger. It’s because of stupid ideas like this!

  17. Ruzzia will just re-buy them, adding to a contract a legal plundering, rape, torturing.

  18. I can just see thousands upon thousands rushing to join up for THEIR stupid war lol

  19. A country of 80+ million cannot find enough men to recruit?

  20. Can we open a petition that such a mercenary is to be called a “Landsknecht”? Totally made up that name on my own, has no historical precedence at all.

  21. Germany went from having litterally castrated its military to now doing some dumbass shit like this that seems to show that they’re still too far from having a serious military strategy. Just reintroduce conscription if you’re worried about manpower shortage and potential war in the near future, not these ghetto ass half measures.

  22. Wow. Just shows how ineffective the Scholtz government is.

  23. Can’t wait for them to recruit all the Turkish immigrants and call them the janissaries.

  24. They should institute the draft and see how many people leave the country rather than serve.

  25. The most pragmatic but controversial solution is to recruit mercenaries from friendly African nations. With the carrot of a decent salary + opportunity to get a residency after 5 years of service.

  26. With so many foreigners in Germany to begin with, there are plenty to choose from…..but don’t be surprised when the result isn’t as expected….lol

  27. Germans don’t reproduce, so they need foreigners to fill their military, it’s the only solution

  28. Lol US commited terrorist attack on pipeline that directly affected Germany, and Germany was like “yes, nothing happened” and now mass media spreading bullshit propaganda presenting Russia as basically Nazi Germany with a goal to conquer Europe, Russia have zero interests in doing so. Ukraine war was easily avoidable if West was willing to talk, but no, they were openly financing and arming Ukraine since 2014 for a proxy war vs Russia, any superpower would react the same way as Russia to protect its interests. The biggest threat to peace in Europe is US aggressive militarism and aggressive approach all over the world, only fool can’t see that, and now after Ukraine (since it failed in weakening Russia) EU will be the next bait for another proxy war vs Russia.

  29. Lets see how motivated migrants really are to get german nationality…
