How many versions of a Marie Antoinette style movie/show is she going to make? Priscilla and Marie Antoinette are the same movie, basically.
Even if Apple did have endless resources, they should still pull her funding on principle.
Lost In Translation is probably one of my favorite movies. If not my absolute favorite. But I have no tolerance for nepo babies, and this family is lousey with them.
Maybe people don’t want to watch what you want to make
Why should anyone spend endless resources on YOU?
Really curious about all these comments disliking Sophia Copolla. Did she do something tangible to warrant critique of her filmmaking abilities, or is this just basic misogyny disguised as distaste for nepotism?
Well, you know what they say about assume.
Did Sofia criticize china? Apple budgets disappear that way
I was also thinking that a Coppola would have endless resources
She comes across as entitled
The execs didn’t like that the female lead was unlikable. The same execs who produced Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon.
Yeah, that’s some sexist shit.
Edit: Apparently quite a sexist sub, too.
And I thought the godfather pt. 3 couldn’t possibly be bad, but she made that a real drag too.
This just reads “I’ve never had to work a day in my life”
If she expects anyone to have endless resources, I’m guessing she’s too expensive.
Let her borrow against her salary if she believes it was going to be such a hit; if it’s great she’ll get paid, if it sucks she loses the money and her reputation
Apple see that the lead is Florence Pugh and they said NO.
Not sure what all the dislike is about. Yes Godfather 3 was terrible. But it was also about 30 years ago. Since then she’s done incredible work as a director.
Sofia Coppola is definitely not in “blank check” territory. Her only commercial success was 20 years ago and her stuff since then has been very hit or miss. Also reducing the execs down to just “straight white dudes” and inferring sexism is lazy and reeks of her own egoism. Apple TV if anything has been progressive with the projects they have financed including a slew of shows with complex female protagonists.
they must have watched godfather 3
I like Sofia and her movies. And I think she is speaking towards a real issue. However, this is an ironic comment considering her father is a living legend & had to self-fund his own dream project.
She got into film school (Art Center College of Design) only because her father donated millions to the schools computer lab. She then rarely showed up to classes. She surrounded herself with the most talented students to help her do her projects. We all thought very little of her back then. She kind of did the same after college and married a talented director and built a reputation of being creatively lazy. (She was hated by the Japanese crew of her first film.) She hasn’t changed much.
Yeah it’s sounds like she wanted 200 million for a 5 episode series that didn’t have CGI or major stunts. Apple probably thought it was a nice little story for 40-50 million but Sofia wanted to go bonkers. She’s not Scorsese, getting an unlimited budget for a 5 episode series. Someone is full of themselves. Apple has deep pockets but they are still a company that needs to make money.
My daughter also thinks she will get endless resources from who’s in charge (me)….because she is a child.
counter perspective: the idea that apple tv executives are a bunch of out-of-touch straight white male assholes with no clue is extremely believable. perhaps sophia coppola’s position as an extremely privileged nepo-baby affords her the ability to call these losers out when others in her position would have to bite their tongue for fear of being black listed? whatever you think of her movies this seems very likely to me. even if her show sucks this could still be true
She’s a good director and deserves work but she’s not someone who has earned a “blank check”.
Better directors than her have trouble getting any financing at all but she’s out here pissing and moaning because Apple won’t give 200 million for a period piece character study miniseries?
Apple TV is a joke of a production company. They have no idea what they are doing. Last years PA’s are now Executive Producers.
The entitlement of the Coppola family is crazy, don’t get me wrong I love their work but it’s now a multigenerational trait complaining about studios not giving them an endless budget for their projects.
What a spoiled entitled attitude
I think she did one good movie but she is the definition of nepotism
Fuck Apple TV for what they did to Jon Stewart show.
