  1. If you survive and if the ptsd from serious firepower doesn’t utterly destroy you. It’ll be worth it?

  2. France does this. You can join the foreign legion and qualify for citizenship in three years or after getting wounded. It’s called *français par le sang versé* (French by spilled blood).

  3. A completely useless citizenship… your passport is not very powerful, they are not a tax haven, I don’t see what benefit being Ukrainian can have…

  4. Zelenskiy’s surprising announcement looks great. But if the Russian Confederation continues the war endlessly, those foreign soldiers should fight against it until they become elder citizens. Already many foreign troopers who wanted to protect Ukraine’s freedom went back to their nations due to unexpected PTSD and serious wounds. Russia is diehard, so, the Ukrainian government should think carefully a negotiating with Russia to cease this war. Ukraine’s brave heart to keep its sovereignty was so respectable but troopers are humans, not invincible combat machines. Only a few foreign soldiers would agree with Zelenskiy’s proposal. But his approval rating had been getting lower since he announced a mobilization to enlist more soldiers. Ukrainians are perfectly tired.

  5. I don’t think anyone would join a bloody war for Ukranian citizenship, but it’s a good thing that they give citizenship to foreign volunteers.

  6. Great!

Then you can’t leave if things get rough, and Zelensky can subject you to the 18-60 travel ban for the duration of the war.

Why would anyone want Ukrainian citizenship?

To be subject to martial law

  7. I don’t think that is very attractive. Considering the Ukraine position.

  8. I think that’s a fair reward/outcome for any of the fighters that want it.

I have read the responses that say some negatives about Ukrainian citizenship, but I think Ukraine could have a phenomenal recovery after the war.

At this point, I’m thinking it’s pretty unlikely for Ukraine to take back much territory, but surviving as a country against such a larger opponent could really invigorate their people.

  9. considering how many of their own citizens fled the country to avoid conscription…

  10. It’s controversial topic. But it’s not worse than the draft… Lesser evils and all I suppose.

  11. Ukraine needs to set up the draft for their citizens so they have xxxxxx soldiers not foreign soldiers to get xxx soldiers. Ukraine has had almost 2 years to set it up but instead has dithered during a war for their existence.

  12. In a sense, its not a bad deal. If you survive, and bring in a large amount of foreign cash with you, as dark as it is, the Eastern parts of Ukraine are going to have some dirt cheap property that needs to be redeveloped. There are also going to be all sorts of civilian industries that will need to expand into these areas, most notably construction, which means a lot of business opportunities. When that’s combined with the fact they are very likely to join the EU after this, and its very easy to live anywhere else in the EU if you’re country joins it.

It means fighting in Ukraine as a foreign fighter is basically an express ticket within your lifetime of become an EU citizen, essentially; which in turn, means even if you don’t want to live in Ukraine, you could live in any of the EU member states in the future.

Taken all together, there’s a lot of good personal motives here for why someone might choose to join the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, if that’s what you needed.

  13. Ahh yes everyone is killing themselves to go to ukraine before war
