I will be driving next week (late January) from Lake Bled to Brda and I see there are three routes. There is one that’s clearly shorter, but which is the most scenic route? I am willing to drive in the snow, but only if the roads are maintained.
Which route should I take?

Most scenic, but probably closed next week is bled-kranjska gora- vrsic- trenta-bovec-gorica. Ask around about the road conditions.
I’d personally just go through Ljubljana on a highway this time of year (Or anyt8me tbh)
For road conditions check [here](https://www.promet.si/en).
As far as which road to take, I’d take the highway, because I’ve been down these back roads plenty of times. You will see a lot but the roads are quite tricky, lots of altitude changes, sharp corners, narrow exposed sections if you take the shortest route.
The most scenic route is over the Vršič pass, but it looks like it’s closed at the moment. It might be open next week, you can check [here](https://www.amzs.si/na-poti/alpski-prelazi/vrsic-slovenija) (“Trenutno stanje” means “Current state” and “popolna zapora” means completely closed).
The middle route on your map goes over a 1277 m high mountain pass first and then through valleys. It goes mostly through very sparsely populated areas, mostly covered by forests.
The route through Ljubljana is mostly via a motorway. It goes through some nice landscapes, but parts of it are through more populated areas and there is a lot of traffic on the motorway (you could also get stuck in a traffic jam if you go during peak traffic hours) so you don’t exactly feel close to nature.
Regarding the route through Villach and Udine, I don’t know most of it. The area to the west of Gorizia is quite boring, though.
There’s [one more route](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/46.3686277,14.1042724/46.0130754,13.5686373/@46.2249904,13.6506276,10.08z/data=!4m9!4m8!1m5!3m4!1m2!1d13.5750189!2d46.3439342!3s0x477a67dfd56ae7db:0x61c195488e5f6c96!1m0!3e0?entry=ttu) that I’d recommend if you want nice landscapes. You go via Jesenice and Tarvisio to Bovec and down the Soča valley from there. This way, you go through the upper Sava and upper Soča valleys, which are both very nice (especially the latter).
Another option is to go to Bohinjska Bistrica and board the motorail to Most na Soči. The views from the motorail are pretty nice.
Do not take the one passing Villach, it’s way out of the way. The 2hr28min route is scenic but the valleys are so narrow, could be stressful depending on road conditions. Another route which maps did not suggest is taking the highway to Jesenice, then the road to Kranjska Gora, cross the border in Rateče (Slo), pass Tarvisio (It), take the pass Predil back to Slovenia, down to Bovec and then to Goriška Brda. From Kranjska Gora on very scenic, mountain views, once in Bovec you’ll be driving along Soča river most of the way to Brda. Time 2h42min. Vršič pass is currently closed, has not been plowed. But of course, check the conditions before departing Bled.
[Most scenic](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/4260+Bled/45.9339119,13.7096197/@46.0628765,13.3412511,9z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m10!1m1!1s0x477a8e1dd7139961:0x400f81c823fec50!2m2!1d14.1145798!2d46.3683266!3m4!1m2!1d13.5192858!2d46.323847!3s0x477a429b412a8bc5:0x8ae51bcd2d1091e0!1m0!3e0?entry=ttu) this time of year, since the Vrsic pass is closed, and if you’re not in a hurry.
I would avoid Vršič pass, just because it can be a bitch with snow around.
Honestly, your best bet this time of year – board the car train in Bohinjska Bistrica, take it to Most na Soči, then drive down to Brda. It will take you bout the same amount of time as going via the motorway, but the car-train is a fun experience on its own and you’ll get some beautiful nature along the way.
You can go with car train from Bohinjska Bistrica to Most na Soči or Nova Gorica. It si fun experience. More info: https://potniski.sz.si/motorail/
Take the car train from Bohinjska Bistrica to Most na Soci. This is the best and most fun way.
