• Peers backed by 214 votes to 171, majority 43, an unprecedented move seeking to delay a treaty with the east African nation that paves the way for the divisive asylum scheme.
• Responding to the vote, Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain said: “It is rare for the House of Lords to intervene so resolutely in a Prime Minister’s flagship policy and a sure sign that his cruel and costly plan is in trouble.
• “Our polling shows that [61 per cent of people](https://www.bestforbritain.org/new_mega_poll_december_2023) want an early general election and now, having lost all authority and unable to deliver on his promises, even Sunak must see it is time to go to the country.”
Asked whether he could be tempted to call an election in the event the proposal is blocked, Mr Sunak said: “It doesn’t have to take a long time to get legislation through – and that is a question for the Labour Party.”
Asked a second time about taking his Rwanda plan to the country, he said: “Well, I think people just want the problem fixed. That’s what I’m here to do.”
Headline is a bit misleading, as in order for Sunak to suffer a humiliating defeat he would actually have to be capable of feeling human emotions.
Please for f**k sake call a general election. I double dare you.
There’s not a chance in hell he’s gonna fight the election over Rwanda.
Everyone is a hypocrite. Tories though, are the both hypocrites and thieves.
Just one failure after another with these people.
GE now.
Did he whine in a monotone voice with the last word of the sentence sort of drawn out?
That’d make a change.
‘Humiliating’ is definitely an overly and incorrectly used word in the world of politics. I doubt they care that much, you think he goes home crying in his humiliation? lmao
Elections, must get rid of twat and replace with another twat with the same agenda so we can win.
This shouldn’t be the reason for the election…it’s the Lords asking for more time to see actual evidence of legality, not a “trust me bro, it’s the will of the people” pressure.
The case of a general election is that we have changed the PM twice since we were last asked, and it’s clear whatever mandate that was given for the Johnson manifesto, can’t possibly be valid for two wild lurches in opposing directions. It’s not like Major taking over from Thatcher or Brown taking over from Blair…these are insane lurches away from the choices we were given…
Wimp PM with no party support threatens the HoL… This will work out great!
Just think, when he goes we’ll inevitably get yet another bunch of spongers put in the Lords. Ludicrous system.

Mr Sunak did not rule out calling a general election if the House of Lords blocked his plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, when asked [in November](https://www.itv.com/news/2023-11-17/braverman-says-sunaks-rwanda-scheme-will-fail-as-she-sets-out-five-point-plan).
