  1. Interesting! £29.39 in 1994 is about £60 in today’s money. I currently have 35 items in my Tesco basket and the total is £48.54.

Depends on the specific items you buy, and maybe clubcard offers weren’t a thing back then. I wouldn’t say I shop particularly cheap nor particularly expensive.

  2. More importantly what language is that algorithm supposed to be written in, which appears to think that there is an inequality operator ≠ available via a 1994 keyboard?

  3. It is interesting. In a nerdy way. Quite a lot of variance.

    Bananas were 39p / lb. They’re now 90p / kg or 41p /lb

The guardian has gone up from 50p to £2.80, but that’s a bit more complex than just inflation.

The cheapest Tesco sandwich is now £1.50? 89p likely at least doubled, depending on the sandwich obvs.

The very cheapest veg oil is £1.85 now, compared to 65p

  4. A coupon for 10p😅

Oh well. I guess every little helps !

(I apologise in advance for that nonsense)

  5. The guardian for the same price as minced beef. I don’t know if I’m more outraged the guardian was ever regarded that highly or that I have to pay £5 for minced beef these days.

  6. The problem is I still think and expect to see these prices.

  7. Also, the receipt is still looking fresh because it was printed with a proper printer on proper paper! None of this modern-day thermo transfer nonsense!

  8. Does it bear the faint aroma of britpop, Levis denim and ck one?

  9. Remember when I could get 10 cigarettes and some food with a fiver .. just over ten years ago the tin hats seem right we will be priced out of everything and the universal credit will kick in with social credits ..omg hope not lol

  10. I can easily spend £40 on a half full bag of crap out of the Co op

  11. Honestly, its not as cheap as I would have expected, considering that the value of the currency itself has changed.

Also, visa debit card payment in 1994 must have been quite rare.

  12. Ahh… the good old days, when you could afford to eat.

  13. Putting this into context a little.

I was at uni, just finished my first year. A housemate of mine shopped at Tesco that year, and bought only the new range of ultra-cheap own brand things. White packaging, minimal blue and red print, he called “prison food”.

  14. thats quite a find! Prices we can only dream of 😔

  15. If minced beef is 55p, wtf are they putting in those burgers to make them £1.39 ?

  16. Guardian readers shopping in Tesco wow how things have changed

  17. Fucking sandwich for 89p. Just got a reduced sandwich for £1.20 and thought i was lucky.

  18. I’m disappointed it doesn’t tell you who the store manager is.

Last time this happened, we found out he’d been promoted from a Tesco Metro up to a big Tesco Extra
