  1. This is pretty weak.
In terms of scandals, this one only measures 1.4 on the Prickter scale.

  2. It will be an unpopular opinion but so what? If I have a flat somewhere that’s an investment property and I have to travel for work to that place I don’t give up my rental income to save my work money. Other MPs have money in stocks or businesses. Should they have to sell them to pay for accommodation away from home? This is just MPs using the expenses system for what it is intended and the Mirror stoking some manufactured outrage.

  3. Imagine embezzling money from a private sector job. You’d be sacked.

  4. Tbf most of this is non news, it’s public info, and if the mirror had done the reporting correctly it’s about 54 Labour MPs and 6 Cons

  5. Something I’ve been saying for a long time that seems to be too obvious a solution to actually do ..

Build a big building complex for MPs, that MPs can use free of charge, that also has serious security.

Would be a big one off cost but then instead of the second house allowance would only need to pay for staff and maintenance.

Building should be built close to parliament so they can spend more time working rather than travelling.

That could also be helpful for when parliament has late sittings, so at least MPs can have a decent night sleep before the next day.

Make some purpose built meeting rooms. So MPs can meet each other more easily and give them resources to do this (things like whiteboards, big screens or projectors, etc.)

Then also would save major costs. e.g. instead of hearing why an MP “needs” insanely expensive wallpaper at home because they have to entertain foreign dignitaries, do it once properly in a place that would be used by their replacements.

  6. This is similar to what some people do with social housing. Get a council house, let it out to so and so and live with your parents or partner etc. Another scummy one is: pretend you’re having domestics with your husband, council relocates husband to another home which he rents out and still lives with the wife and kids.

  7. I have said it before if MP’s need a place to stay when doing their job in London then there should be a large accommodation barge moored in the Thames next to the Houses of Parliament. They do not need any long term accommodation or large properties so why are they renting these and not just living in a suitable type of property to suit the immediate needs.

  8. When they police themselves, who is shocked by this.

  9. Hah.

Wait until they realise that 1000’s of members of the military do this exact thing.

Get a married quater house that costs about £200 a month for a 3 bed house.

Buy a house over 50 miles away. Rent it out. And because of the “forces covenant” you can do this on a buy to own, not buy to let mortgage.

    It takes the piss.

These MP’S are still pricks though.

  10. We should end all this second home bullshit, along with all the expenses for food, etc. The state should buy a building in central London and kit it out for 650+ MPs. Each MP can have a room/suite assigned to them, while they are elected to parliament. Food and laundry services can be provided and secure buses laid on between the building and parliament.

Of course, MPs would never vote for that.

  11. Not a lawyer, but assuming it is legal, then that is smart, if you don’t mind someone living in your home, why wouldn’t you do it

  12. When the expenses scandal hit, someone mentioned that they’d all have to rent and someone else said they’ll pair up

MP A owns a house which he rents to MP B

MP B owns a house which he rents to MP A

As both MPs declare they are renting in their expenses, it would need some digging to find this out

The ideal solution is to purchase the [old county hall](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_Hall,_London) as it has 605 flats, plus the hotels and let the MPs have that
