We only borrowed £119B in 9 months, a tremendous sustainable success. Sure, let’s open the money taps not to fund infrastructure or services… But for tax cuts. Can this lot get fucked already?
As an ex card carrying Tory this kind of thing puts off a lot of centrist conservatives who would rather have lower debt/borrowing than more tax breaks.
Maybe pay off some debt, or build some infrastructure, fix the NHS,secure those borders or you know invest in the actual fucking country….. But noooooo,
we gotta cut taxes , as it might convince someone to vote for us.
I’ve stepped in stuff that I find less offensive than these cockwombles.
Cut all taxes to 10%, makes them easier to calculate.
So is anyone running a poll. Something like
Tax cuts for all. 100-1.
Tax cuts for the poor. 1000000-1.
Tax cuts for middle income. Unable to calculate odds.
Tax cuts for the wealthy. 6-1.
Tax cuts for the select few 2-1.
Tax cuts for the select few and business. 1-1.
Coincidentally roughly the estimated cost of the NHS and DfE’s repair backlog.
For 14 years: Can’t invest now, things are shit.
Now: Hey things are better than expected, let’s… not invest.
This is the exact amount Labour would be investing for their green fund, I hope they use this whenever the tories say it’s not affordable
When will these clowns realize that the majority of people, who would benefit from these tax cuts, would rather have a nation that actually works, rather than the broken, underfunded, shit show that twelve years of austerity has produced.
Anyone who doesn’t is a sociopath and can be ignored anyway.
I’d happily forgo the few quid a month extra, if it means that the NHS gets funded better, and we have some functional public infrastructure.
How about instead of tax cuts we actually invest in some of our public services. One suggestion I’d make is to look into the disgusting state of litter that exists in this country and nationally fund ways of tackling it via a new Keep Britain Tidy campaign. I have never seen it so bad in this country.
Tired of these budget games designed primarily to screw over the next person to hold the position.
There needs to be some laws around politicians making poor decisions for the country when they know they have no chance of winning the next election.
Makes me utterly sick after what they’ve done over the past 14, more specifically 7 years. Jeremy Hunt deserves his own special place in hell.
You know what I’d like to see is these massive money companies actually paying tax. I don’t mean they pay a little tax so they are above board. I mean actually pay what they owe instead of fiddling figures. Looking at you Amazon.
Conveniently timed for an election to lure the gullible.
I’ve seen polls that show this is out of step with what the public want. As most have already said on the thread people want working public services.
What people haven’t mentioned is that these are tax cuts on the never never. Basically they’re unfunded now but it’s alright as Hunt has promised that the money for them will come from massive public cuts in a couple of years. Which again is totally counter to what the majority of the British public want.
And another thing how does giving out tax cuts help counter inflation? You know the thing we’ve been told to not ask for pay rises to stop. The term Lawson boom has resurfaced recently, which isn’t a good thing as if these tax cuts cause an increase in inflation the only thing the BoE can do is increase interest rates. It didn’t go too well in the early 90s.
Labour is always accused of tax and spend. The Tories for the last decade have been tax and not spend whilst public services wither.
Its easy to say its gone to their mates, but really where has all this extra tax gone?
Poll in the Times yesterday (from YouGov) asked people if they wanted more spending on public services or tax cuts. 62% wanted more spending on public services. Only 22% wanted a tax cut.
Councils, health and other services already under funded a lot, let alone infrastructures! It’s predictable after scraping the northern leg of HS2.
we wouldnt mind paying taxes if it wasnt squandered on absolute bollocks
And yet borrowing continues.
Austerity would dictate that you don’t cut taxes, but instead cut borrowing, but that’s not what buys votes.
I don’t want a tax cut. I want some crumbling services invested back in to. I want my hospital treatment to not take 16 months between diagnosis and operation. Can’t wait for these fucking cunts to piss off.
Can we just pay back some of the mountain of debt we already have?
£18bn for Public Services and Infrastructure and £2bn for defence procurement so our woefully underinvested armed forces can get some much needed attention and we can send some more equipment to Ukraine.
I was watching QT the other week…Tories over a 100 billion wasted, more than doubled the debt…tried to blame covid and furlough for it all, yet that was like not even a 10th of the money…then labour detail how they would fund something that would create new jobs, do something good for the country but requires them to borrow (as the Tories are leaving them with sod all) and all hell breaks loose on labour.
So no one barely moans at the over 100 billion wasted & no one questions where the money comes from when the Tories do anything but its the complete opposite when labour do anything. I’m not a fan of labour but man shows how different people are to the parties. Ever since Fiona took over…anytime labour mention any plans, she lays right into them, how you gonna fund it, are you gonna give us answer now but never the same treatment to the Tories and yet labour always answer her questions if she doesn’t stop interrupting
Or, here’s a really crazy idea, tax corporations and billionaires, who have sometimes DOUBLED their fortunes over the last few years. Go after tax dodgers.
A shame they didn’t link it to the recent Guardian article about a study saying the £20bn would be better doesn’t on public services.
Could spend it on fixing the country that’s falling apart before our very eyes, just a thought.
Alternatively, there’s room for a good few crony contracts in £20bn.
Bribe incoming, I’ll take it but I’m still not voting for those bastards.
Have you considered: Keynsian Economics?
Thatcherism clearly isn’t working, so how about ol’ Reliable?
Then pay the fucking doctors, nurses and police a decent fucking wage. I’m not rich, I’m not poor, I don’t want tax cuts if it means paying the people who keep us going a fair wage. How hard is this?
Just what the tories need, more money to be given to their cronies.
They will just piss it away on inheritance tax and pensions. They don’t give a monkeys about anyone else but their base.
So which super-rich special interest group will benefit?
Crude calculation but 35.3 million taxpayers could get a personal allowance uplift of only £560 for £20bn. Doesn’t seem much.
Maybe everyone should get £250 regardless of income.
It doesn’t seem fair to give it to those paying additional or even higher rate tax but it does keep it simple.
Cuttin taxes now is a bribe to get a votes.
Tax increases have increased over the last decade to an all time high. If the tories got in power again for another 5 years they would reverse that decision sooner than you think on cuttin taxes because they are now secure until next general election.
My question is… all this austerity and cuttin back and strippin down public services and councils goin into debt etc etc etc… my question is…
Where has this money gone? 🤔
The NHS is practically fucked because of the Tory austerity policies and he wants 20 billion in tax cuts, tax the fuckin billionaires what are they saving up for, you would think a billion would be enough for any man’s lifetime, instead he and his ilk want to have a a look at the poorests bank accounts to see their not stealing from the state, bit OTT coming from crooked Tory twats.
Remember the blood transfusion payouts are which are due to start being paid out tory party has pushed to the next government in power do its not a 20 billon savings.
Enough to DOUBLE the junior doctor pay restoration demand and still have £16 billion to slosh around
Strange how “austerity” was all about lowering borrowing and the deficit, but when he has £20bn there’s no talk of just, like… not spending it
Also great as northerner to see our 2/3 of HS2 cancelled so he can give rich people a tax cut…
Saving them to bride the unintelligent before the election. Unfortunately they will fall for it.
Government borrowing is not like traditional debt. , it isn’t to paid off as such, it is sold as bonds
Here is the thing Jeremy…FUCK THE TAX CUTS….REBUILD OUR SCHOOLS!!!!
I think moving the CGT threshold back to 10k would be nice. Encourage side hussles for lower income earners without the fear of messy tax forms.
Some good (!) grants or schemes would also be nice – something like the EV charge point or insulation ones of the past
I don’t know Jeremy, maybe instead of spaffing all the money we have spare on tax cuts, we could instead try paying off some of that 2.6 TRILLION POUNDS of debt we’re in? Maybe???
Room for 20bn in tax cuts yet not enough money to support vital infrastructure. I live in a rural town that maybe loosing a key bus route in 10 weeks due to a lack of funds.
Remember this is the party that came to power promising to fix the budget deficit. Which had been caused by Labour recklessness.
They said Labour let borrowing get out of control. The credit crisis and subsequent recession was no excuse according to them. The Conservatives promise sound financial management.
Record tax income by not moving income tax thresholds. Time for an inheritance tax cut…
