The world should learn from Poland’s tragedy: restoring democracy is even harder than creating it

  1. Especially if there are lots of bad actors actively trying to hamper or destroy every single effort made to rebuild what has been destroyed. Not to mention millions of citizens mindlessly supporting the whole thing.

  2. If Poland has a hard time restoring its democracy, then goddamn… we are screwed…

  3. The mafia state. The complete and total mafia state Kaczyński’s party has built within 8 years is bordering on third world countries. With what conceit they acted and stole every single bit of the state treasury. Disgusting is not even a word. And there are still online regards shilling for those criminals. More than disgusting.

  4. It’s kind of sad that we used to think liberal democracy was a one way street – once you had it , there would be no going back. Seems so naive now and yet even so we sit back and don’t seem to proactively defend it or our ( admittedly somewhat vague) ‘western liberal democratic values’ against corruption and possibly antithetical cultural difficulties. The old paradox of tolerance perhaps.

  5. It’ll be interesting to see what Poland resembles in the next decade. Will it retain its cultural character? Or will it be destroyed by identity politics and immigration from the third world like the Western European countries?

  6. Sensationalist journalists writing years of sensationalist articles about Polish “illiberal” democracy now having to write sensationalist headlines about how democracy is working as expected in a country following a democratic transition of power.

Poland took some significant steps backwards under PiS but it was never going to devolve to becoming a Hungary. The truth is, western journalists have some strangely high standards for countries like Poland to meet in order to write “nicer headlines” while it is okay for UK to be ruled by Conservatives for essentially a generation, and not talk much about how FN is that close to landslide victory in France, not to mention other countries.

  7. Sensational/Biased title imo. Yeah PIS was shit and it sucked but calling it “restoring democracy” is idioticy imo. If our democracy was in such a bad state then simply winning elections wouldn’t mean anything

  8. LMAO, sooo melodramatic

Western liberal media is a fucking joke, they’re so detached from reality it’s hilarious

Reality: PiS lost because they ran out of ideas

  9. Poland has had democracy for more than 30 years… unless I’ve just arrived in an alternate universe, they have never lost their democracy since?

    Typical Guardian drivel.

  10. > tragedy

I hate PiS as much as anyone but come on. Innocent people dying in a war in Ukraine every day is a tragedy, dumb Polish internal squabbling is at best an embarrassment

  11. Situation is really bad, right now there are 2 different law orders in the country. And every part of political scene is certain law is on its side.. Imo it is needed to make hard reset, otherwise problems will only accumulate..
