The drop between 1991 and 2001 was probably due to the Croatian war of independence, when hundreds of thousands fled the country. I’m not sure what caused the drop between 2011 and 2021.
We have Croatia and Bulgaria with the expected population drop so far, I am expecting Romania, Latvia and Lithuania to have similar results (if they also had census in 2021).
People are traveling out for work BUT most people I have personally talked to wish to one day to return to Croatia.
According to the german bureau of statistics 426.845 Croatian citizens were registered in Germany in 2020.
sad tbh
i spend tons of time in 1 what was a decently sized croatian village and there were 2 big waves of emigration, one due to the war and one due to croatia joining the eu. people just dont have the patience to wait for the greener pastures to grow on their side
Out of curiosity, has this had any noticeable effect on house prices/rent in Croatia?
It was conmunist up until 1990
Is this because people are dying/ not reproducing, or leaving the country due to sociopolitical climate?
