Update: 09.35 gmt

A Russian Ilyushin-76 military transport plane has crashed in the southern Belgorod region bordering Ukraine.

At least 65 people on board were killed, according to Russian reports quoting the ministry of defence.

Ria Novosti news agency said those on board included captured members of Ukraine’s armed forces.

Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said he was aware of an “incident” but gave no further details.

A video shared on social media shows an aircraft taking a downward turn before crashing out of sight.

EDIT – removed nitter link to russian retraction video, as dubious.

  1. A plane full of Ukrainian pows. Read before you comment.

  2. Ukraine POW flying on plane while Russian soldiers rode the cattle train? That sound right.

  3. Love how sky news parroted the Russian talking point that it’s carrying POWs

  4. What would you put in a plane? High value, urgent cargo. Missiles? Possibly. High value Russian troops? Possibly. Ukrainian PoWs? Why not just put them in trucks as that’s much cheaper?

  5. stop listening to Igor Sushko and wait for confirmed info

  6. If Russia said something it’s either a direct lie or *pravda* (tactical truth). You should NEVER take anything Russia says at face value.

  7. The 65 POW lie is just like the age old “oh it was a discarded cigarette which caused the explosion” lies. It’s Russia’s way of trying to play down Ukrainian victories. Like kid’s lies in school, but kids grow up. Turns out Russians don’t grow up. It’s embarrassing really. They have lost all global credibility, now an international joke.
But interesting to see what outlandish lie they come up with next, keeps me guessing anyway.

  8. So the russians say it transported 65 prisoners of war with 3 guards to keep the prisoners under control and 6 crew members…
    Sounds plausible right? 😂

  9. >Ukraine’s general staff, quoted by the Ukrainska Pravda website, said the plane was transporting missiles for Russia’s S-300 air defence systems. It made no mention of prisoners of war.
