Why are Russians risking years in prison to protest? | DW News
In Russia more than a thousand people have joined protests over the arrest of an activist and a prominent Kremlin critic demonstrations have taken place in the semi-autonomous Republic of bashkortostan which has seen a high number of casualties in Ukraine police detained file Al asanov who had publicly criticized moscow’s mobilization drive for the
War a protester sliding on the ice as his ped Away by police neither freezing temperatures nor the threat of imprisonment stopped more than a thousand people in Bashan using traditional Bashir songs and dance to protest the arrest of a local rights activist but it wasn’t long before police put a stop to
It do we live under a fascist regime here or what every person has a constitutional right to express their own opinion I’m not calling for an armed Mutiny am I it was a far cry from a mutiny but it was one of the biggest protests since the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Demonstrators are Furious about the arrest of fil alov an environmental activist considered a local hero and champion of the bashkia people he was convicted of inciting ethnic hatred and sentenced to four years in prison for a comment he says was mistranslated alov has also harshly criticized the government over the
Disproportionate number of ethnic minority men being sent to fight in Ukraine he’s called the mobilization drive a genocide of the bashier people but local authorities have characterized alzen and his supporters as separatist extremists with the Kremlin downplaying the significance of the protests that have broken out in the region since his
Arrest I would not agree with the wording Mass rights or mass protests there are no Mass rights and mass protests there there are separate demonstrations which concern local authorities and local police exclusively but once again I categorically disagree with the idea that these are mass demonstrations but with Russia’s next
Presidential election right around the corner any display of anti-government sentiment no matter the size is an unwelcome one let’s go straight to DW’s Yori retto who joins us now from Ria in lva as DW is banned from reporting in Russia so Yuri protests are spreading what more do we know at this point
Point well according to Media reports Sarah at least 2,000 people gathered in salavat life Square in UA the capital of bashkortostan the Republic of Russia salavat life was a Bashir poet a national hero and a fighter for the rights of the country’s indigenous people the protesters today tried with
All their looks appearance not to provoke the police in any way for example not even to show that they came to the protest because it’s dangerous in Russia instead they came up with uh let’s say creative tricks such as taking each other’s hands and dancing around
Trying not to gather in one place and walking from side to side um at the beginning at the action police uh of the action police officer selectively checked people’s documents and warned them of responsibility for uh illegal action what they say and when they asked the people why they were there the
Protesters answered that they just came to look at the monument to salvat your life but but that didn’t work for long soon after the action began special police called omon appeared at the square and began Point by Point detentions at least 10 people were detained edali so far so these are
Regional protests as we’ve highlighted there yur does it mean anything for you know more broad politics in Russia and for Putin’s grip on power yes of course I mean presidential elections will be held in Russia in two months time and Vladimir Putin wants to be reelected with an overwhelming
Majority so his popularity uh is very important to him right now of course these are not protests in Moscow where they could be particularly dangerous for the Kremlin not are they protest directly against Putin but the fact that so many people are still taking to the streets in Putin’s Russia despite the
Risk of being arrested and imprisoned for many years this fact is remarkable also there is another aspect that makes it more complicated which is the nationality issue because it’s not the ethnic Russians who are taking to the streets here but bashkir who obviously feel dominated by the Russians um as in
Bashan National minorities and other republics also feel that Russian domination and sometimes discreditation so they remain silent and tolerate this they are asleep so to speak but only as long as Moscow is strong DW’s Ria bureau chief Yuri retto thank you
More than a thousand people have staged protests in the Russian region of Bashkortostan, after police arrested and sentenced a local activist and Kremlin critic.
Bashkortostan is one of Russia’s semi-autonomous republics. It has reportedly seen an above-average number of casualties in the war in Ukraine. Demonstrations started on Wednesday when police arrested Fail Alsynov. He had publicly criticized Moscow’s mobilisation drive for the war. Protests have now spread to the regional capital, where police detained several demonstrators.

The look on that Fails eyes hurts to see
well we have the same problem in Western countries, lets look at Julian Assange
Sicilians ans Triestians is Italy also don't call themselves "Italians", why doesn't everyone call for separation of Italy?…
I'm not denying anything I just want to point out that 8 thousand people out of the 4 million population of Bashkortostan is nothing even dozens of thousands is just the friction of population to show some real discontent there needs to be hundreds of thousands and if we take in consideration whole Russia its 8 thousand people out of 141 million people…
Some populations are just used to authoritarian regimes.
hi, respect. there no food, isc no water, heat, medi avante
no heat or a lot of skateless thin icers. top wealth driving petro to keep warm
did the globe take a solar flare?
Those are bashkiri though
Good for these ppl in Russia. When fighting a tyrant, a dictator, u need all the ppl to rise up regardless of the consequences. They can’t possibly jail everyone and u should never “fall in line” w/the dictator or let the dictator’s threats, jail, or violence scare u or prevent u from doing what’s right to take control back from the dictator. Bc if u do, then the dictator will continue to use those tactics to get what he wants. If on the other hand, the ppl aren’t afraid of the dictator and won’t “fall in line” w/the dictator, the dictator loses that power. U have to look at it as a war as a revolution bc that’s what it is. Some will be jailed, some may be killed but that’s the sacrifice a large group must take in order to free the group from the tyrant controlling them.
the ppl in Russia thinking they have rights.. Also it doesn't matter if Putin has a good view or not, no one is going to try to get the power out of his hands as that is a death sentence..
It is quite intriguing how Russian authorities are downplaying this and not addressing it with the max brute force they usually resort to because there's a real threat for the Kremlin here: That other parts of Russian and, especially the "urbanites" are poked into awakening, be ashamed and realize how sheepish they have been.
I'm surprised Russia still has police. I thought they'd all be soldiers by now. Lol!
Also, "Are we living in a Fascist regime or what?" Well, duh! You've been living in such for over 100 years now. Lol
The American people need to rally together against the Biden Torrorist Regime as well!
This type of things happen in America all the time and many B of the ppl calling Putin a dictator here would be talking about how ppl need to be arrested in America.
Because it beats dying in a frozen mud hole in Ukraine?
I wish for your People to have their own Bashkortostan
Let’s be honest. Calling it an election is a joke. The result of the “election” is not even remotely in doubt.
Just shows you how fragile yhe russian dictatorship is, how afraid they are, not taking any chances.
So sad, but it wont last, they never do
Russia uses the war to rid itself of the young men belonging to ethnic minorities.
What she meant to say was, "With Putins guaranteed Presidential win right around the corner." Why would you call it an election when thats not what it's going to be? Anybody running against Putin will die
They will vote for Putin again, nothing to see here.
What about the Americans who stormed on 6 January? How about a huge wave of protest across the USA of tens of millions of Americans? You are manipulators. You are isolated. The countries, representing 7 bln. people, living on Earth, are supporting Russia. Only 55 countries of the west (=the 'golden billion') is fighting against the odds trying to save the American 'Ukraine uber alles' project of 2014.
Lol threat of imprisonment? Fascist regime? It’s Russian LAW no local demonstrations without a PERMIT.
Something about having to live in one of the worst countries on Earth I figure!
Do we live in a fascist regime…😂😂 yes! Yes you do
Never give that much power to so few people. And don't give them guns
This minuscule number of protesters is laughable if compared to the reset of the population that are either dorsal or actively support the aggression on Ukraine.
I can't believe Russians even bother voting. At this point, is the gas and time it takes to get to the booth even worth it? Putin could lose 80-20 , and then somehow win 60-40. Your country isn't a democracy.
in russian election, a crime to criticize lead independent putin.
One word "russia" is all we need to hear to understand this country!
So typical! Just when Ukraine is destroyed through NATO ambition and on the point of collapse, foolish media outlets like DW clutch at straws, hoping to humiliate the victor. Thanks to reckless encouragrment, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are dead, and what is left of poor Ukraine will languish in poverty and ignominity for many decades at the very least.
Power to the people
The problem is a 500 year old system with secret policing system. It is built from the explicit catalogs perfected/optimized/improved during 500 years. M.O. is as follows : a group of Russians without much intelligence who can be subsidized and authorized to use violence against next door neighbor. The backstabbing your own is/becomes institutionalized. It's in the detail. The constant attacks. The disregard for human life. P controls all that. Better maybe than Brezhnev 5 year plans. But P plays with fire. He make the secrets very public for the whole world to see. including the barrage of clever cover-up lies. The life of the 500 year old is in danger. Even a Russian can't help to think , they have no guaranty their kids will not be eaten? but safe in Silo Viki-faction subsidized heaven.
Free Free Bashkortastan
What do Russia supporters have to say about this?
Bet they wish they had guns
I mean, Russian army is a joke, they have consistenly humiliated themselves in Ukraine. People could easily take over lol
I feel so bad for Russian
Loyalty over accountability is exactly how dictators think. Reflect on this America.
Hi Vlad,
It looks like the reason why there are more indigenous peoples being conscripted into the Military than City Folk is that the conflict's casualties lowers the numbers of Doctors that the Central Government needs to provide for these remote villages to fulfill the Equal Right to Health Care Russian Citizens enjoy from The Russian Constitution.
Which is to say, that that strategy only works if you don't intend to bring back all of your wounded.
Modern warfare on the other hand is designed to create more wounded than the Armies can handle in order to limit the number of dead, which takes more men out of the battle line to care adequately, for the wounded.
So if your side isn't conducting a reginal genocide on its conscripted soldiers, tell me please why you, Vladimir, started the war which would create more problems for the future Russian people than you had before you started this dumb war of personal aggrandizement?
I mean, you did intend to bring everyone home–leave none left behind, right?
I sure as Heaven would not like to run on your record!
You should have bailed in less than 90 days, and dumped it on your boss!
If the Russian Press had any balls they would have had you Impeached by now. It reminds me of the 45 rpm record called "The Berlin Top Ten" from way back when.
Very respectfully,
R
Russia is a country with such a long tradition of perpetrating useless suffering onto its own population that it is plain indecent for it to coexist with the civilised West
God free the Russian people.
It is time for their freedom
I live in this region and for many days some messengers hardly worked
What is the end game for Russia. It is not like US-Iraqi conflict where you can just fly out. Russia shares a 1300 mile border now with a country where 44 million Ukrainian people want Putin to face justice. Also 4% of the population of Russia is Ukrainian, that is another six million. Putin has opened a pandora's box where all he can do is keep fighting until what he has invoked eventually inevitably consumes him. He is a farther, it must be sad for his family watching the hole he is digging himself into.
They are tired of their young men dying in an unnecessary war to satisfy Putin's ego.
What protests? I mean I live in Russia, evil censorship allows me to read and view any western sources and I still didn't noticed any anti government protests in Russia.
They do NOT hold, “elections,” in Russia! For any news station to describe them as such is offensive and misleading in the extreme.
If this sort of thing spreads it can certainly endanger any regime, but as long as this buys the majority privileges like not having to die in ukraine, it seems unlikely this would spread far and wide. And the racist aspect underlying all of this hard to denie making it even more unlikely to spread from the periphery. And Putin has already demonstrated how much the regime cares for people's rights of those slave races in the caucasus.
