Oh nice I didn’t realise we were getting a brand new one built for us, I just assumed we were shopping for 2nd hand.
This MF’s going to be badass. I hope they open a public poll to name it.
Reported cost last week 200m
Reported cost next week 400m
Final cost who the feck knows, we’ve unlimited gold at the end of the 🌈
We just need 4 more like it
That will look great docked in the port with the others because there is nobody to man them
It’s part of the navy’s expansion plan, they’re looking at having 12-15 ships by 2035. According to sources within the DoD. It’s in line with LOA 3 from the report on the DF
The same people complaining about this will also complain that the defence forces are massively underfunded.
Ireland is no longer a poor country, and shouldn’t be sponging off other countries for defence. It is about time we invest in defence to get to the same level as Norway, Sweden, Austria and Switzerland.
The way things are going the Irish Navy will outpace the Russian one. Can’t wait to see the “LÉ MAYO FOR SAM” chasing them down.
The russian navy is poorly guarded… we could just steal theirs…
Or buy it super cheap. Whichever I’m free the weekend in either case.
It looks nice now, but in a few years, it will be put out to stud in Carrick for booze cruises.
It’s amazing how they can build and sell these things for only 10% it would cost to build a children’s hospital.
This ship is designed for roro use to enable UN contingents to be shipped abroad. It’s designed to be a hospital ship for humanitarian use. Also a tanker. Essentially it should be funded from the NGO and overseas aid budget.
There is no indication that this is intended as anything other than an auxiliary vessel.
I’m not reposting links here but you can find them under “Norway” post in r/irishnationalsecurity.
Could we not just get a few hundred trawlers and just scare our enemies off?
This we do my friend this we absolutely do, I read a book called world war 3 by a British Naval Officer. Even though it was set in the 80s it was a very interesting read given todays 1939 type atmosphere. We’re on the verge on a massive global conflict just everyone’s too blind to see it coming hurtling towards us
Hopefully they can catch some of the major drug hauls coming through Ireland 🤞
We need some fighter jets, a green aircraft carrier and a nuclear powered submarine if we going to do this properly
a few F-22s would be cool to take care of our airspace too
How much emergency accommodation could be built at this cost, for a ship that the Navy currently doesnt have the manpower to put to sea.
So it can pretend to shoot missiles at phantom (russian? who knows?) ships.
it’d be cheaper chartering G6’s to send our soldiers into faux-combat zones.
The most useful thing we can do to defend ourselves is gear the entire national defense towards cyber warfare, and naval warfare, specifically anti-submarine warfare. Anti-air measures should be ship based or ground based, and the fixed wing component of the air force should be focused on providing aerial support for the the navy.

That’s the only way we’ll get bang for our buck
YAY!!!! Lets spend 300 million on something we dont have enough staff members to operate it. absolute clowns. should be spending this money on fixing the staffing issues in the naval service
So it’s really going to cost €400m
While we’re upgrading our Navy, we should have anti-submarine capabilities to protect undersea cables. I’m surprised the Russians haven’t tried attacking Internet cables in the Atlantic.
All branches of the defence forces will have to be separated from the typical public service pay considerations and amendments made to their pay structure. There should be benefits up the wazoo. Anyone living in an organisation where your life is literally under the control of another should be compensated handsomely.
Good. I’m for more boats, jets, bigger army, better pay for soldiers, the whole lot.
I say we just institute national service, bit of craic
Nice! Robo ship is it? Can be run remotely from a computer or automatically set to go from point A to point B?
Or who is going to man it?
If I’m not mistaken these ships are generally fairly lightly armed.
In a conflict scenario would they not need the protection of more heavily armed ships?
Which we lack.
Irish public: please sir, can we please have some housing and a healthcare system that works??
The governement: You guys are just going to LOVE this…
Irish public: ok, yeah that’s a cool boat, but about that housing and healthcare we just spoke about…
The government: IT GOES BOOM BOOM WHEN YOU PRESS THIS BUTTON!!!
Irish public: very good, but if we could just get back to the hou-
The governement: NEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW…. BOOM BOOM! TAKE THAT FUCKERS!! *YVAN EHT NOIJ, YVAN EHT NOIJ*
Finally a ship that can rid the world of Monaghan
hey lads
if you don’t want to spend so much sure the Royal Navy can do job for a smaller fee
what could go wrong

It should be equipped with anti submarine capability, the incident where the Brits had to chase the russian sub out Cork Harbour was embarrassing.
We’re getting **the big one.** Do we know what we will be naming her?
Well I can’t think of anything better that it could have been spent on.
Will be money well spent
Good. If we want other countries to take our navy seriously, we need to start taking it seriously ourselves.
€300,000,000
That’s how many homes ?
How many Gardaí ?
How many doctors ?
How many nurses given proper wages ?
How many disabled people given proper welfare and not being hounded onto lower amounts ?
I could go on forever. A country like ours should have the absolute minimum spending on defence. We don’t need these big military ships that will never get used. Look at Iceland, an island off the west of Europe like ourselves and they spend nothing on the military and are absolutely fine. It’s so stupid.
