Actually, it’s all just a trifle. But actually it is not.
When SIMONE VEIL was elected the first woman president of the EU Parliament in 1979, it was one of the few great moments for women’s rights in European parliamentarianism. Simone Veil, after whom whole corridors, halls and VEILchen schnapps are named in Brussels authorities, had as French Minister of Health under Giscard d’Estaing four years earlier – after bitter political disputes – pushed through the legalisation of abortion, which among liberals, civil rights activists, enlightened democrats, normal people, feminists & the French is still regarded as a milestone in modern social history.
More than forty years later, a certain ROBERTA METSOLA of the Nationalist Party of Malta (belonging to the EPP) is to take over the office of President of Parliament on 18.01.2022. This is not because the parliamentary rules prescribe it, but because the strongest groups in the EP arrange this mid-term change at the beginning of (every) legislative term: one half of the term for a Social Democrat, the other for one of these even more conservative bones from the EPP. In the current legislature, even the liberals of the Renew parliamentary group have participated in this by now habitual wheeling and dealing, in return for which they have probably won a few very nice (other) posts.
Admittedly, “Wonderwoman” Metsola (Maltese self-advertisement), an EU showcase of the highest order, has taken many – from the point of view of liberal, left-wing or green MEPs – superficially decent positions (LGBTQ, Rule of Law vs. Poland, disability and children’s rights), but there is a TINY PROBLEM in connection with her nomination.
Metsola belongs – together with Polish & Hungarian right-wing extremists, the fascists of Fratelli d’Italia & Vox, the Pius Brothers as well as the end-time nutcases of the “Church of Latter-day Saints” – to the most militant ABORTION and PREVENTION opponents in Europe: “Abortion (is and) remains our red line”. According to her personal voting record and the statutes of her party, the matter is (pretty) clear.
Not only has Metsola reliably voted against all EU Parliament resolutions touching on the right to abortion – from the Tarabella Report in 2015 to the Matic Report last year – but as recently as September she could not even bring herself to support a Parliament resolution calling on the Commission to initiate comprehensive arrangements to protect women from BODY VIOLENCE. The fact that, as the French Libération points out, it also seems to be more interested in preserving the Maltese way of life (along with its corrupt monetary transactions) than in introducing fiscal transparency is, of course, completely irrelevant in this context. But nevertheless telling.

Problem: it’s a militant anti-abortion cunt
