Lol I call bollocks. This sounds like that TV license scanning van
>”We’re still developing the technology. So we’re ready to make a proper announcement but I would say it’d be reasonable to do it in a way that was concealed.”
Er what the fucking fuck?!? So are you going to announce it or not? And will there be proper public scrutiny of the technology to ensure, for example, that’s it doesn’t just give false positives for anyone that the police point it at persistently?
An ocular pat down? Which snake oil Tory donor is getting rich off this one?
I’d be fascinated to know how this is supposed to work.
Most people in the UK are weirdly okay with the government tracking every second of their life.
Strange bunch in this country.
“Government funds small scale research project into terahertz imaging”
Does Cleverly actually go out of his way to try and look as much like a shit budget off brand mafia boss as possible?
Basically they’re using infrared plus visible light with a computer algorithm of some description to try and determine if a knife is on someone’s person. I suspect there would be a lot of false detections and misses based on that criteria. Like what stops it from picking up a metallic keyring? Or will it still work if the knives have gotten close to skin temperature from being stored in a pocket for a long period of time? Some scrutiny of this needs to be involved.
An expensive project that will waste police time with false positives, while running over budget (to the delight of whoever gets the contract) to boot. Tackling poverty and the other factors that lead to knife crime would be better but that does not excite people like fancy technology does.
We’ll need enough police to walk the streets first.
Can’t remember the last time I was within six feet of a police officer outside of a large event
More than happy about this.
If it’s scanning everyone they can’t say it’s racist.
If it saves lives and is a very good deterrent then it’s a great thing.
Tech would be interesting to read into though, if it keeps flagging pace makers over machetes etc
I’m interested to know ‘ How’ is it a metal detector, some sort of thermal scanner or?
I mean from the article it just looks like FLIR, can’t see what algorithm is going to do if they start putting their hands in the pocket the knife is in.
Ocular pat down. We need some macdonalds on the case.
Because we’re not surveilled enough and the police don’t constantly overreach as it is.
Joyous.
“electromagnetic infrared waves and a unique computer algorithm”
So, an IR camera and just blindly search anyone who has a cold spot somewhere that is vaguely knife length? Fucking hell even from the example picture this looks terribly bad.
But if you want to mess with it, add a few strips of fabric to the inside of your clothing, 30cm by 5cm should do it. Bonus points for doing it in multiple and unusual locations.
Yep do it. I’m more than okay with some random copper secretly scanning me when I have nothing to hide, if it helps catching the bastards out here stabbing people
A few years ago when putting my hand luggage through the scanner at Stansted Airport my bag got pulled aside and thoroughly searched through because the scanner had mistaken the insides of my MP3 player for a knife.
If a large x-ray machine in an airport struggles to differentiate between a small electronic gadget and a weapon then I have trouble believing a handheld scanner will be able to do any better.
Stop and search has a success rate of about 25%, I’m all for something detecting knives but unless the success rate is higher all this will do is increase stop and search of innocent people.
All this article says is that it is capable of detecting knives, nothing about its accuracy.
Tarot cards could also be used if that is the only measure of success.
I hope they put these in the entrance to schools and shopping centres
Love this new world of AI we’re heading into, what horrors are in store for us I wonder
Time to wrap my cock in tin foil and go for a stroll
Lol barely fucking see a police officer these days. Who is there to even do the scanning?
Serious question: How can they tell the difference between someone carrying a knife on their person and someone carrying a dildo (or other legal object)?
Unlikely. Any electromagnetic field strong enough to detect a blade sized lump of metal is probably going to mess with pacemakers.
They’d rather do this than a simple stop and search. Okay…
I hate this country more every day. Every time something bad happens they exploit it to impose measures that make the place a worse place to live, which leads to more bad things happening because everyone’s so fucking miserable.
I have a feeling people of the darker complexion will be stopped more. But it’s 2024 “that would never happen”.
I’ve heard training police to scan for machete bulges was a success and had a 90%+ accuracy. If this can pick up on obvious criminals, I’m all for it. If they are going to scan for pocket knives and people just bringing their knives to a party, it’s effed up.
Police walk down the street???? Pull the other one.
Doesn’t every police person do this all the time they are on duty, and off it no doubt, irrespective of technology. If you want knives off the street this has to be part of an education and community involvement strategy. Unfortunately the police do not have the resources to deal with society’s problems on an ongoing basis, and this will be another one that will be dropped when problem No.543 comes along.
You know they’ll probably ‘scan’ all the wrong people
