>The abortion centers of Luna vzw and VUB Dilemma launched a campaign Wednesday calling for a new abortion law. The current law is dated, according to the organizations. Among other things, they advocate extending the abortion period. Now a pregnancy may only be terminated in the first 12 weeks after conception.

>The centers’ call is heard by majority parties Vooruit, Open VLD and Groen. “We must increase the possible abortion period from 12 to 18 weeks and abolish the patronizing six-day waiting period,” say Tom Ongena and Katja Gabriëls, who mainly address CD&V. At Vooruit, they are also stepping up the pressure on CD&V. ‘The parliament must be able to vote freely. For 10 years there has been a majority in parliament to vote the modification of abortion. If PS asks for their bill to be put on the agenda, the bill can be voted for us this legislature,’ said Flemish MP Freya Van den Bossche in Villa Politica. And Groen also supports the demands of Open VLD and Vooruit.

>But according to CD&V MP Els Van Hoof, the coalition agreed to continue working after the expert evaluation “in order to find a consensus in the government.

Wonder how you can reach a consensus with one party hanging on to a religious dogma for dear life, that isn’t shared by the others.
Might be time to call a cat a cat and start explicitly asking CD&V why they want to force women who miss that 12 week window to have a baby against their will, where they think they get the right to enforce that, how society is supposed to benefit from that, etc. Because that’s what this ‘debate’ is actually about, as rationally 24 weeks without a waiting period is perfectly reasonable.
