So this “hiker” is me!

I went on a solo hike in Glenbarrow, Co. Laois on Saturday. I slipped and my ankle went out of place causing what I now know is a severe Tri malleolar fracture that I am sitting waiting to have operated on to literally put my ankle back together with plates and screws!

Anyone the details aside, I wanted to post to firstly mention and thank the two hikers who stopped one of which stayed with me, and the other who went ahead to get phone signal to call for help! And secondly to show my severe gratitude to the volunteer members of the Laois and Offaly Civil Defence and members of An Garda Síochána who made it to me, got my ankle into a splint and carried and pulled me to safety and an ambulance to get me to A&E. Without any of these people, who knows what might have happened to me! Also to mention the amazing team in Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore who have been looking after me since I arrived to A&E Saturday.

  1. Jaysus OP, that’s not a nice fracture to get.

Hope you get back to hiking quickly. Makes me think about my own preparedness for solo hikes.

Mountain Rescue crews are some class-act people and you’ll get some really good care in Tullamore.

  2. Ouch! Glad you got help swiftly. Also glad you were taken to Tullamore and not Portlaoise 😅

  3. Thank me while you’re at it. I was gracious enough to not get involved by inflicting a little more physical harm with emotional damage by poking your ankle and showing off my walking ability for my amusement.

  4. Ok maybe I’m being a bit slow- but is that you wrapped in tinfoil in the photo? Do they wrap your head and everything? I’m guessing it’s for shock/ because it’s feckin freezing?

Anyway, hope ya feel better soon OP!

  5. Hey OP! I’m one of the volunteers with Laois Civil Defence! Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to the call out but I’m delighted to hear you’re doing well and everything turned out OK 😊

  6. Oh i feel for you. I regularly go solo hiking, usually capard/glenbarrow side. I never really think of the danger of getting into trouble up there.

  7. I’m delighted you got safely off the mountain.

One part of your post confused me. Why did the other person have to go elsewhere for phone coverage? I thought you could make an emergency call anywhere even without coverage. Genuinely curious.

  8. Happened a couple of years ago as well in Laois. A woman joined a hiking group. They commented on her shoes saying they weren’t appropriate for hiking but she insisted she could come and the hike would be no bother to her. Literally half way through the hike she broke her ankle and had to be helicoptered out of there. The group was silently furious with her but apparently nobody said anything to her after her ankle broke.

Were you wearing hiking appropriate shoes OP?
