  8. There is a huge difference between the young Turk movement/young Turks and CUP, which did the genocide.

    Young Turks were the group of people who were sent to Europe for education, and they brought back european ideas. Good and bad ones. Some were liberal some were socialists and some were nationalists.

    They all did counter old-fashioned Ottoman authoritarianism and absolute monarchy.

    It is so frustrating that people don’t know anything about 19th-century Ottoman politics, yet they still talk shit.

    It is like people saying Orange and Red are the same colour.

    And it’s so ironic people say Young Turks are evil genocidal bla bla bla. Because Young Turks are the Turks that were educated with European ideals and European standards, people that had a Western education instead of a traditional Islamic one. They were radical they did not want the old ways.

    Like, why would they pick that name? Does “Young Turks” not have the same connotations in turkey it does elsewhere (i live in canada)? When I think of “young turks” I equate it with armenian genocide 1:1…

  13. When not referening to the the political group active in the ottoman empire, the term ‘young turks’ has been used when talking about people agitating for radical reform. 

    A lot of nationalist groups in the 19th century used the epithet “young”, such as young italy, and young italy.

  18. Well good luck with that. No monarchy left in Turkey, so whom are they opposed to exactly? And there is also staunchly anti-immigrant, CUP style idealistic party out there, whose ratings is only around 5%.
