Hi CasualUK, every time I make jacket potatoes my plates make this bizarre pattern and I don’t know why or how. this is after 10 minutes in the microwave (we do then put them in the oven as well, don’t worry!)

  1. Microwaves heat water, potatoes are mainly water, ceramic is porous so the cracks is where the starchy water vapour congregates, then burns.

  2. That’s not a good plate to use in the microwave, being ceramic. They seem to absorb too much heat for me. Use glass or porcelain. Also, instead of making slits, just stab the potato a few times around with a fork. That should give you less spatter.

  3. That’s probably a plastic place (melamine) not really suitable for the microwave. There is a recent video from slo mo guys on youtube where they microwave a CD and the pattern looks very similar to this.

  4. Glazing is cracked on the plate any moisture in the plate is oozing out

  5. Cover the potato with a thin coating of olive oil then prick the skins a few times with a fork. Works for me every time.

  6. Your plate has moisture inside it and the moisture is boiling to the surface in the microwave through the cracks.

This also means that bacteria I can grow inside this plate that won’t get cleaned in the sink or dishwasher.

    Throw the plate away.

  7. Sheet of wet kitchen roll on your plate. 2 if you’re feeling rich. Stab the potatoes ,instead of cutting them, on both sides

  8. If you can, buy one of those microwave vegie cookers, put your potatoes in that, and about an inch of water in the bottom. Your plate has done this because 10 minutes, you’re cooking the plate too.

  9. I must be losing my mind. I couldn’t come up with any connection between “jacket” and “plate” until I saw the picture.

  10. Time to throw away the plate.

It’s got moisture in the plate/ cracks.

Also does the plate get hot in the microwave? Because microwave safe plates do not get hot in the microwave (they obviously get hot where the food transfers heat to the plate) microwaves excite water particles and it’s a sign there’s water in your plate that should not be there ..

  11. My wife attacks potatoes like this.

I stab them once, to prevent explosions, and that is it.

  12. It’s karma for putting your spuds in microwave

  13. The glaze on your plates is cracked, you need to replace the plates.

  14. You’re cooking the plate as well as the microwave 😀

  15. The issue is that it’s in a microwave. We all know that there are only three ways to cook potatoes. Boil ‘ em, mash ’em, stick ’em in a stew.

  16. Because you’re making jacket potatoes in the microwave rather than the oven or air fryer 😂

  17. May your chosen Deity forgive you for the massacre of the jacket potatoes in the microwave, but if you must, put the potatoes in a brown paper bag (not a grease proof one) and then give it a go.

  18. Stab 4 cocktail sticks in them. No plate required. You can see when they’re done too

  19. It’s water blowing out the little holes in the potato

  20. Next time cook them directly on the microwave plate or do them in the oven. Everytime you put a plate in the microwave, it cooks the ceramics which will eventually break them.

  21. Rub them with olive oil and put them in. No issues. As for the potatoes not sure.

  22. Just bang it in the oven for an hour. Much better. Do something else you want to do for an hour.
