  1. Of course they hated everything he stood for and they play the snarky thing with quotes, but is a game. They are playing with you.

  2. Who did you think was behind the assassination? Rhetorical.

  3. Been waiting for this to happen. Same with Muhammed Ali. It was very odd growing up and being taught that MLK was a hero to all Americans, and then getting older and finding out how many people hate him. Or how people completly rewrite what he stood for and the things he said.

It will at least be refreshing if people start running for office by saying they disagree with MLK and want to repeal the civil rights act.

  4. Remember the good old days when people at least pretended not to be prejudice towards minorities?

  5. lol conservatives hate everything. Mostly themselves

  6. As it becomes clear that being racist doesn’t hurt their reelection chances, we’ll see this more and more.

Political correctness is the only thing that’s forced Republicans to do things generally considered “being a good person” for a long time.

  7. GOP bullshit has always been transparent, but lets not forget how much MLK detested centrist liberal handwringing, too. Dude was a socialist, like every great American, and if you want to honor his cause, that’s the place to start, not naming a business corridor or a shopping holiday after him.

  8. Learning in school that MLK was a hero that stood for justice is not ‘revisionist history’ trying to whitewash bigoted beliefs of the era.  It was an effort to bring up a generation of Americans who wouldn’t be on the wrong side of history.
That’s the reason why far right conservatives call schools and colleges ‘liberal indoctrination centers’ and are trying to change school curriculum.

  9. Wow, the demographics of voters that used to call themselves Confederates, then later called themselves Dixiecrats, who voted for nearly 100 years of Jim Crow until they were forced by the left to stop, that now call themselves Republicans, you mean to tell me they hate MLK. Like holy shit, can we stop pretending we don’t know who these people are. Like, how many times do they have to tell us before we believe them?

These treasonous bigoted assholes did not magically become the good guys all along when they started calling themselves ‘Republicans’ some 50 years ago. We need to stop pretending we don’t know who they are or what we are up against because they change the party name they go by. Ffs.

  10. So this is one of those stories confirming something I have believed for so long to be true I just kind of assumed everyone thought that. Am I crazy judgmental or are folks who are honestly surprised by Republican racism naive on a level I fear for their ability to survive on their own?

  11. Well he was black and they are conservative. I think it’s fair to say that even black conservatives hate MLK. Candace Owens being a prime example.

  12. Ok guys, banning abortion isn’t winning us elections. Going after gay and trans people isn’t really working either. And don’t get me started on how bad our school board elections went on our book ban platform. We need something new to run on.

    Hmm, make people’s lives better?

    No that’s stupid. You’re stupid.

    How about trashing MLK?

    Perfect!!

  13. Oh come on, they *always* hated him. They’ve just spent the last several decades constructing themselves a conservative cultural cocoon within which they feel comfortable openly hating him without shame or ostracization.

  14. The Republican party has been an offshoot of the confederacy ever since Southern Strategy. Nice to see them finally comfortable admitting it

  15. MLK majored in sociology.

Florida just banned sociology as a core course at it’s state universities.

  16. Why do you think the US went from pro union, pro services “good old days” 50s to rabid tax and service cutting 70s, culminating in the Reagan cult?

The Civil Rights movement and MLK meant we suddenly had to provide services to *minorities* with our taxpayer dollars.

  17. At least they’re finally being honest about their beliefs

  18. It’s seems strange they would understand the bible and not MLK.

  19. *folks judging conservatives by the content of their character*

    Conservatives: “this is racism!”

  20. Seems weird for the article to imply that white conservatives have not openly despised MLK, specifically, and people of color, generally, since forever. Have they not heard of “The Southern Strategy?”

  21. It’s crazy. People forget that Conservatives didn’t want us to even celebrate his birthday until the late 80’s. They pushed that rhetoric quite openly.

  22. To be fair, they’ve been admitting it for years. It’s just finally trickled up to the politicians and talking heads. I grew up hearing all kinds of hateful shit about MLK.

  23. It’s about time considering how many conservatives in power today were both alive and actively opposing MLK back then. It’s astounding to me how people not only act like racism just disappeared following the civil rights act, but pretend like the people who fought against it did too. The police officers who hosed down and sicked dogs on the civil rights protestors went on to become police chiefs, the local politicians that denied civil rights activist permission to protest went on to become senators and governors, and the small business owners that refused to serve black people went on to become CEOs and, in one case (Trump) the actual president. The Civil Rights era isn’t ancient history, it was relatively recent and the people who opposed it are still in positions of power to this day.

It’s honestly a tragedy that the civil rights movement ever so slightly pre-dated the widespread adoption of colored photography, because it’s consistently enabled people to view it as being further back in our history than it actually was. Hell, people forget that there are members of society alive today who witnessed, survived, or God forbid even *contributed too* the Holocaust.

The only thing that’s changed with this is that the younger generation of conservatives, who weren’t there to protest the 1960’s civil rights act, don’t have a personal history to distance themselves from and thus feel more comfortable being honest about their beliefs.

  24. >Conservatives Are Finally Admitting That They Hate ~~MLK~~ Brown People

    FIFY

  25. They have always hated him, but they aren’t afraid to be publicly racist after 2016.

They also always hated him for amplifying socialist ideas.

  26. Regressives, not conservatives.

If they were conservatives, they would want to conserve the current status quo. Instead they want to regress the country’s social progression back to Jim Crow and some want to go back to Antebellum.

  27. I wonder if conservatives are just foaming at the mouth waiting to publicly say the n-word. First, someone like Donald Trump needs to casually say it at a rally or something, and that gets the racist ball rolling and normalizes the use of the word for them.

  28. MLK was a *radical*, in every good sense of the word. He came to the conclusion that the racial problem was, first and foremost, an economic problem. It’s not white v. black nearly as much as it’s have v. have-not.

If you think conservatives of any stripe would support or respect that viewpoint you are sorely, sorely mistaken. Fuck, today’s milquetoast Democrats won’t even get behind that message.

Republicans that have been trying to co-opt MLK’s legacy have been disingenuous AT BEST. It has been an organized misdirection, and they are losing their ability to keep a straight face.

    Fool me once…

  29. I saw some wild things this past MLK Day.

We had some winter weather the day before the holiday so that evening the local news made a Facebook post reminding everyone that there would be no school closure announcements that evening/the following morning due to schools already being closed the next day for observerance of the holiday.

Every comment under the post was just people complaining that it’s the worst holiday, why do we need to observe it, it’s making our kids woke, etc.

I can’t imagine what kinda life all these people must live if they’re compelled to spout racist dribble on what basically amounted to a PSA.

  30. So conservatives are finally admitting that they are racists?

  31. During the 2020 protests, the amount of cons saying to the likes of “No, you can’t *protest*, because MLK said ‘can’t we all just get along’ once, so like protesting is not what to do” was obnoxious.

  32. >Conservatives are Finally Admitting That They Hate MLK **… Again.**

This is what the headline *should* be. In fact, every single one of these stories where Conservatives return to doing openly what they did before the Reagan/Bush years when they used to yell their racism instead of dogwhistle it should be framed as “Conservatives do horrible thing … just like they used to.”

  33. Now the Left needs to reclaim him for the radical that he was.
