Hi folks,

I found an old picture of my grandfather who has since passed away. I’m trying to find out where he was when this photograph was taken.

I assume, based on what I know about him, that this picture was taken somewhere in London around the mid 60’s.

Thanks in advance!

  1. I presume you’ve got the original. Can you read any of the shop names and also the bus route number?

  2. As others have said, with the bus number and the name of the club, it would be straightforward.

It looks like Purcell or Princess club, but those don’t yield any hits. There’s way too many Cafe Ryans.

The word House may well be from a Lyons Corner House cafe, which at the time narrows it down to a few dozen establishments.

Could be Tottenham Court Road but many main roads would look similar.

  3. Posting again without the offending facebook link that made the bot mod go spare.

I’m going to throw this out there. I don’t believe this is London.
I believe it’s Westmoreland Street Dublin circa 1960.
Reason for this is there is a Purcell souvenir shop that features the very distinctive “Ryan’s Cabs” sign on it that looks very familiar.
I did use reverse google image search and it came out with the following:

Then there’s this facebook image of an old Westmoreland Street featuring a familiar fronted building with Educational written on it. that I can’t share.

You need to speak to the r/Dublin lot as it looks very much to me like you have the wrong city.

  4. Looks like it could have been around The Strand near Kings College, Lyceum theatre area. The turret/spire in top right looks familiar. And probably mid-60’s from the look of the clothes.
