Vitré is a medieval town part of a system of defense known as the Breton Marchlands. It is, alongside neighbouring [Fougères](https://www.familiscope.fr/assets/fiches/39000/39823-chateau-de-fougeres-600×450.jpg), one of the best preserved medieval city as pointed out by Victor Hugo:
